Yes
A bit far away for flash to make the "model" pop. The 50mm on my D300 was at f1.4.

One question is do I need to get lower and more square to make the subject stand out on the street or do I need a different focal length.

Up again this sunday so will be trying again for a similar but better look.

I like it (y)

You could try a careful selection of the subject, create a mask - then do anything you like to either her or the surroundings.

I had a play, and of course I've gone just a bit over the top with a glob of lens blur also, to demonstrate. Also I only spent a few minutes creating the selection so it's far from perfect.

I think that the first just out does the second

Yes, please don't take the edit as an improvement in all aspects.... like I say, it was OTT purely to demonstrate that the subject can be isolated and her 'levels' and brightness/contrast adjusted, as the OP wished to do with fill flash. The lens blur was pure messing about. The far BG in the original is great as is (y)
