The Backpacking Photographer Series

All sounds good. I spent 7 weeks in Tanzania a few years back, another mate did several months in Malawi. Might as well travel while you have the chance :)

Good stuff.
The parts of Africa I've seen so far have been amazing, fascinating place and great for taking photos.
:)

Hey Jacob,

Sounds like your still having a wicked time. Im not sure when you intended to be in Vietnam but Ive just had a 2 weeks photography project offer in Indonesia and will be away from Mui ne from the 21st Jul. If you still need any info on Mui ne, the Mekong or places to visit just drop me a line. The best way to get around is the open ticket tourist buses, very cheap and most of the time reliable although the train is a must for part of your journey if you have the time.

If you are still in Cambodia, Kampot is a great little village well worth a visit, has a old colonial French town perched high on a mountain top complete with casino and palace.

Great to hear your enjoying your travels and lets hope your stomach gives you no more jip...

Hi Grahame,

Thanks for letting me know, I've just arrived in Phnom Penh and if all goes well I will be in Vietnam around the 27th July. I am planning to head to Kampot after here and then bus from Kampot to either the Delta or HCMC. I was planning on probably using the train between Hue and Hanoi, Hanoi and Sapa and probably Hanoi to Nanning in China and then uses buses for everything else. I hope your trip to Indonesia goes well! (y)

All the best

Jake

It really is.
I am interested to return now that I've read a lot more about Cambodia's history than on my previous visit.

Hi Jacob, still following this with a keen eye as my trip to vietnam is coming up in a couple of weeks! It looks like youve enjoyed it so far.

Out of interest where abouts did you stay in Hoi An as I am aware its full of expensive places however like you I am on a budget so want somewhere cheap!

Any tips most welcome.

Cheers

I actually messed up a little in Hoi An and forgot to book anything so I had to pay $20 a night. However I stayed at An Hoi Hotel which is in a great location. For $20 you get a huge double bed, air-con, private bathroom/bath and shower, fridge, satellite TV, wifi in room, free breakfast and a swimming pool so it is still great value. Just a bit more than I would normally pay. I have found though the difference between $10 and $15 is huge in Vietnam. If you can afford to spent $15 you get everything I mentioned above minus the swimming pool all over, some places even cheaper, its worth the extra couple of quid.

Great shots from Hoi An, Jacob.
I leave in less than 3 weeks, so excited!
Interesting to read about the difference between $10 and $15-20 in accommodation terms too, will bear that in mind as we travel.

Yeah its a huge difference IMO. If you are with others its even better because it only costs you $7-$10 each (y) Thanks for the comments about the images as well (y)

Awesome, thanks for the info Jacob. Ive booked a couple of nights at the backpackers hostel in Ho Chi Minh to get me set up (and hopefully make some friends!) before I start heading out to other places so will take note of this!

Nice to have a bit of luxury occasionally.

Hi Jacob,

I have been following your website/blog with interest as I'm looking to go back to Vietnam and include Cambodia and Laos this time.

You pictures are excellent and writing is really insighful.

I have been reading your reviews too. In particular the pacasfe review, I am going to have to invest in one for extra peace of mind.

Looking forward to the next update!!

Stuart

Hello Stuart,

Thank you for your comments, I am glad it is of some use. When I finally get home I am going to try and write some more detailed stuff, clean it all up a little and make it all easier to navigate as it is a bit messy at the moment. Also if you need any information that you can't find on the site just pop me over a PM or email and I'll be glad to help you out (y)

Just about to catch the bus to Guangzhou for my flight home late tonight. 36 hours journey ahead to reach London (10hr bus, 5hr wait and 21hr flights/changeover), will try and post the last couple of bits up from Hanoi/Ha Long/China when I reach the UK. Thanks everyone for following it has been the best 5 months of my life and I already have lots more in the woodwork!

Really enjoyed your trip Jacob and it's just given me more wander lust. Thanks for blogging it so well.

Jacob, as I've said before, truly fantastic and inspiring photography. May I ask, is there much processing involved with your particular style? The photography is outstanding, lighting, compostionally, technically superb. I am just wondering if there is a lot of PP involved to really make them pop or is it just minimal due to the initial image being excellent.

Hello Gaz,

Thanks for your comments as always I really appreciate the compliments, the PP varies quite a bit between images, is there any one image you can think of specifically that you would like to know the workflow behind?

Thanks Jacob. There wasn't am image imparticular, however, if I had to choose my favourite part from your site, it would have to be the H'mong Villagers.

Okay if I take the H'mong villagers as an example they will just have small tweaks in LR and maybe a little dodge and burn on the background. On something like the cormorant fisherman I tend to push it at little more but the key with both images is good lighting to start with in my opinion. You may be interested to know I am actually writing a nblog post on how I devised, lit and processed the cormorant fisherman shot now so that should be up a little later.
