It's back, bigger and better than last year and looking for people to join the fun!

Those of you that remember last years challenge will hopefully want to join in again [or be running for the hills] and those that didn't, now is your chance to get involved.

The idea of this challenge is two fold - firstly it is a challenge to see whether you can still take a great photo without all the bells and whistles your modern digital camera offers you, it really IS about the idiot behind the lens! No post processing or other aids, just you and a piece of plastic with some film in it

Secondly is to have some fun, just enjoying taking some photos without fiddling around with buttons or anything else.

Here are the basics of the challenge:

  1. Buy a disposable camera
  2. Take photos with it between August 10th and 24th
  3. Get them developed onto disc/scan them on
  4. Post your favourites here on the forum

OK thats the gist but there are a few things to add to that

1 - This year there is a PRIZE!! Talk Photography have generously donated a £30 Amazon Voucher for the best photo - this will be decided by member vote, so initially you will only be posting your ONE favourite image. After the voting is complete, you can add more to share the fun.

2 - SPREAD THE WORD!! The great thing about this challenge is that everyone can take part, regardless of your ability, experience or specialisation. So if you are one of those people that generally only hangs around in certain forums, please tout this to your fellow birders/sporters/motorsporters/macro-ists/creatives/etc

This thread is to get the word out and discuss, ask questions, let us know where you have found good or cheap throw-aways, etc. There is no need to say whether you are in or not, just get yourselves organised with a camera [or several] and once the image thread is posted late August, get your photos on there.

THIS is last years thread btw.

UPDATE: A thread to post your ONE favourite image to go into the vote has been created >> VOTE THREAD

UPDATE: A thread to share all your other photos has been created, so get sharing and commenting >> PHOTO SHARING THREAD

I will join. I was just thinking a couple of days ago about doing something like this, just between a few of the togs at work and I.

Strange date bracket though, any reason for the very specific time in the middle of August?

We did it over a week last year, in October as I recall, so much shorter days. So this year you get two weeks, during longer days and at a time when folks might well have more free time to snap random stuff as they may be taking a holiday. That's it really.

Any more questions I will answer later, there is a couple that want me photographing their wedding for the rest of today

Go on then, it was fun last year, count me in.

Andy

Me too, I might even complete the challenge this year

Yay! Might even be blue skies and sunshine at some point during those two weeks :)

Can anybody post possible places to pick up said disposables? I keep checking £shops but nothing doing at the mo although I have seen them in stock in the past.

10th-24th August? Oh, goody! That lets me take one on holiday, although it'll be sometime in September that I can get it D&Pd and scanned.

And Bu99er! I was intending to run a similar comp this month but completely forgot about it! Oops!

Sounds interesting! Trying to find a link for last years one but failing, does anyone have it to hand?

Lets stop calling them disposables. They are single use cameras. You don't throw them away after use and wait for the bin men to deliver your prints the next time they come to empty your dustbin!

Steve.

Steve.

It's posts like this which make me want to bang my head repeatedly against a wall. Hard. Talk about sapping the fun out of something. Pedantry doesn't have to appear in every single post of yours, does it?

Count me in for this again Yv. I enjoyed last year's challenge.

Aye.....I'll give it another go...was kinda a fun in a sadistic way..

Somebody remind me nearer the time though please as I have a memory like a sieve (y)

Lets stop calling them disposables.

And what happens to the cameras once the film is developed? Are they disposed of, perhaps?

PS. I signed up for this last time, but still have the camera, unused....still not disposed of ;)
THis time, I'm in...and I'm gonna do it!

No. They are recycled.
Steve.

Irrelevant what happens to them afterwards. First they must be disposed before they are recycled.
Dispose : From the French poser - Meaning "to place".

The same goes for plastic bottles.
They are disposable. They're not called 'Single-Use' bottles. They're disposed of into my blue bin and then recycled.

Go on then maybe this year I will get something vaguely resembling decent?? I still got a couple of camera's from last year too. Although i'm not sure they will be any good as they weren't kept in the fridge!!! ;):D

Sounds like a perfectly reasonable excuse to me... :D

Oh go on then, what's the worst that could happen...

Amazon are selling Fuji Disposables in packs of 3 at the moment - 400ASA and flash for around £16.

Asda, Boots, Morrisons, Tesco and Argos perhaps worth a try too

£5 in Argos at the moment

It was great fun last year.

I'm most likely going to be in Saudi on the dates for this year, if I can get disposables here then I'm in.

The only problem with that might be that it's hard finding any less than 400 ISO, and with the bright light out there, and unknown shutter speed, you might have some problems! But mine came out pretty well last year in the English sun!

 unless I have missed something, I am pretty sure the sun sets, even in Saudi, I don't think the more wealthy locals have paid to keep it high in the sky 24/7 :D
