Valuable Lesson Learned

Expect the un-expected.

Non league football match, referee red cards a defender which I duly captured.
However, I wasn't expecting the player to react angrily and shove the referee. All over before I could do anything.

Referee abandoned the game with 66 minutes gone, sports editor hoping I had caught the shove, me wishing I had.

Anybody else have a similar experience?

Yes, I miss so many shots as the critical moment is a fleeting blink of the eye. Several cameras have had the facility to wind back time. Panasonic seem to be doing good things there with their 4k photo mode. www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/lumix-g-compact-system-cameras-learn/article/4K-Photo.html
If you are filming in 4k, you should be able to fish out decent quality stills from the footage and pick the exact shot you need. I'm not sure how practical that'd be though.

Lesson learned alright, i am at fault myself, i often raise my eye from the camera from time to time.

I had a very similar experience. Ref pulled out a red car after a hefty challenge. As the player & ref exchanged words, I was looking right down the lens. In a split second the player had grabbed the ref around the throat, and shoved hom to the ground.
My finger was nowhere near the shutter release button as I was just waiting for the player to walk off the pitch. By the time I had got to press the trigger, the ref was on his back, with legs in the air!
