Hi guys,

What's the difference between a flashgun, a strobe and a speedlight? I see these terms being used wwuite often but I don't know if they are essentially the same thing or 3 different pieces off kit.

I've got a Jessops branded flash with I purchased about 2 years ago along with my camera but I haven't used it yet, although I am reading some very interesting articles about using off camera flash for portraits so I would like to give that a go in the very near future.

In the meantime I'm just trying to get my head around all the jargon! :)

Thank you all in advance!

Canon call them speedlites (439ex.580ex)every one else calls them Flashguns (360af) ...A strobe or studio flash is things like lencarta smartflash or bowens....

What Shane said, it tends to be an Americanism to call studio type flash 'strobes'.

Flashguns, speedlights, speedlites are the same thing (what you have).

Flashgun/speedlite/Speedlight/hotshoe flash - the thing that sits on top of your camera
Strobe - an Americanism for studio flash, an early brand of massive and lethal studio flash was called Strobe, later became Strobex

Crazy yanks with their fawcets and sidewalks and strobes lol :p

(Just kidding to our American friends!)

Cheers folks
