Where to improve on product photography

Hey guys,

So bit of a random one - I do a bit of product photography as a hobby for some blog stuff that I do, example of photos & content here; http://matthew-evans.info/2016/12/06/astrox-truex-build-log/

At current my lighting source is simply just one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00QQ5RPG0/ref=pe_385721_125802761_TE_dp_2 - depending on the product I leave it attached to the top of the camera, or I hold it manually above the product to keep the whole background a nice white colour (though maybe I should adjust my settings to improve that).

I usually run a white t-shirt over it to diffuse the light a little more to stop any harsh reflections, and they're all taken on some "foamboard" which is just a white sheet of cardboard basically.

I'm looking at ways to improve, there's still harshness in the photos - do I go with some sort of diffuser on the light, do I go to a lightbox? I need to take multiple angles of said products including top down, side shots and the ones in between, so not sure where to improve from here.

Current equipment is the light as above, and a Canon 550d with various lenses (50mm 1.8, Tokina 11-16mm, and the other 2 stock lenses).

Cheers

Matt

Hey Matt,

Your product images on your blog look good. Clean and still with some direction to the light. If you want to really get into product photography - I reckon https://www.photigy.com/ is the best place to learn. Photigy also has a Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_ohuBldTt6XjOLHlGzYE2w where you can get a look at what Alex does. The weekly hangout videos (which are an hour long) contain a tonne of stuff with Alex shooting something live each week.

Also - there's a tonne of more general lighting stuff on the Lencarta Learning Centre inc things like this from Garry Edwards https://www.lencarta.com/studio-lighting-blog/tutorial-black-on-black-part-1/

Cheers,

Owen

Thanks I'll take a look!

As I say my photos are far from perfect (I'm sure many in here can critique them), but for just fun stuff (I do it for fun), I think they're ok - but always looking to improve :)
