Nikon d80 lens

Hi. I am new to photography and therefore don't really understand lens etc. I have a Nikon D80 with a 55-200mm lens which seems really good for long distance shots but no good for portraits etc. any advice would be helpful as I am unsure if it is me being a novice or if I am using the wrong...
