Nikon d80 lens

Hi. I am new to photography and therefore don't really understand lens etc. I have a Nikon D80 with a 55-200mm lens which seems really good for long distance shots but no good for portraits etc. any advice would be helpful as I am unsure if it is me being a novice or if I am using the wrong lens.
I generally take shots of people and landscapes.

I have a D80, not used the 55-200 though. I would second @Heist recommendation of a prime lens. Depending what type of portrait you are taking either the 35, 50 or 85mm 1.8's are very good. Of the three I favour the 35mm but I take a lot of photos of my young kids indoors and the 50mm was just that bit to long on a crop camera like the D80. The 35mm is probably on my camera 90% of the time.

I have just got the 85mm 1.8D and have loved it so far but is obviously already in the range that you have already (although the low light capabilities are much better).

Can't really comment on the landscape side as it's not something I really do.
 
18-55mm DX or 18-105mm DX would complement your 55-200mm. I have the 18-105mm and it is surprisingly sharp considering it's a budget lens. A 35mm or 50mm prime would give you better low light capability and sharp images but would be a bit limiting for landscapes.
