I'm not sure if there's an updated Windows 10 edition, but 'How to Do Just About Anything on a Computer' is clear and enjoyable. I've bought people copies of this before. Not child specific but fine for an eight year old.
It can help to put the 'dead' batteries in an old 'dumb' charger for 30 seconds or so, then switch them to the smart charger. That seems to kickstart many of them.
I've tried plenty, and Eneloops have been the most consistent. We have dozens of Eneloops and use them for everything at home, they just work. If on a budget wait until Lidl or Aldi have low self discharge rechargeables on offer.
I like Kyle's crowdfunding idea. I've done this a few of times with modest amounts with arts and music projects; the return (not just the material return) has always been worthwhile.
FWIW I've never found a dimmed white light (1 lumen or even a light with a 'firefly' mode) any different than a red LED for impairing night vision, and it's more pleasant to use.
