    Thomas Heaton

Small world, I was at his wedding! I would have said hello to a fellow tog (though I barely qualify as one) but I didn't want to distract you. I said to my friends at the time it must be stressful photographing a photographer. Can confirm that Tom is a great guy, that his calendar is fantastic...

Congratulations! Make sure you keep a copy of the paper :)

"You have to break the rules to get the best shot"

I do my best not to spook the animals. At best it will make them warier and harder to photograph in future, at worst all the time and energy they waste running away could cause them problems getting enough food. I definitely wouldn't approach any kind of nest box I knew was occupied unless I was...

    Nikon D750 & D780

Exactly what I'm doing :) If it finishes charging before I finish work I'll start changing the settings to what I use but until then I've nothing to do except what they pay me for.

    Nikon D750 & D780

My new D750 has just arrived, courtesy of Panamoz. It came with a UK plug and according to the Nikon website/serial number check is unaffected by flare issues. Unfortunately I forgot to bring a lens in to work so I can't have a proper play until I get home :'(

    Woodpecker and Weasel

I just saw this on Facebook. Amazing isn't it? I wish stuff like that happened in front of me.

Chance of Northern Lights over Scotland and Northern England

Seems we might all get another chance tonight: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/10563240/Northern-Lights-aurora-borealis-sightings-could-be-even-clearer-in-UK-tonight.html

Chance of Northern Lights over Scotland and Northern England

If only I'd seen this thread yesterday, you could have joined us! Me and a friend went to Dunstanburgh Castle. No Northern Lights but completely clear skies until about one when a few clouds started appearing so we gave up and went home.

Your shots with the Raynox DCR250

So I bought a Raynox 250 to play with when I don't have time to go further than the garden. I'm still just figuring it out and getting used to using a flash but so far it seems like a lot of fun. Here are some of my results so far:

Focus recompose using back button focus

You can focus recompose in AF-C because you changed AF-C Priority Selection to Release. Focus priority means the camera won't take a picture if it thinks nothing is in focus while release priority means it will always take a photo when you press the shutter button. If your camera has the...

    Un-Wanted Guest

Nice shot. I've read that American Mink numbers have declined here as otter populations have risen because they compete for the same food so presumably swimming/fishing is fairly common for them.

    Roadside flowers

It's maybe a little busy but I really like the first one. Makes me wish I'd sat around watching the sun come up like the flower did :)

    More please

It looks a lot better now you've upped the exposure. Looks like you've just missed focus on the eyes though.

    How do you focus?

It means you can tap the back button to bring something into focus, hold it for continuous focus or ignore it and focus manually without messing around with switches/settings and without having to stop taking photos. Very handy for wildlife when you can never know if they're going to hold still...
