    Beginner Some unusal DSLR questions?

Just to add another option - the manuals for many SLRs can be downloaded from the manufacturer's websites. May help shed some light. And buy (or borrow from your local camera club) back issues of magazines. They will usually run a beginner's section once or twice a year.

New to wildlife photography, where best to start and how to improve

I have one like that (b*****d has nesting barn owls, too), but the other 99.9% have been friendly as can be. One has given me complete run of his farm, day or night. But you have to respect it and the land. One farmer was really sour because he'd had a bad experienced of a togger who left his...

New to wildlife photography, where best to start and how to improve

Making contact with farmers? See a guy on a tractor and wave. Ask the guy in the road "Do you know who owns that field?" Or knock on the farmhouse door. BE POLITE - they are busy folk. A very small number will tell you to F*** off, but most are incredibly helpful and friendly. One tip - I had...

New to wildlife photography, where best to start and how to improve

All good advice on here. I'd add a few observations of my own: a) enjoy being out. There will be days when you come back with no shots. Remember to put the camera down occasionally and just enjoy the world. b) be ready. I left my camera in a hide, went for a pee and almost trod on an otter and...

    Beginner Internal property photography.

I wouldn't worry too much about misrepresentation. The Consumer protection regulations would not regard you as committing an offence unless you materially misled a consumer into making a purchase that they would not otherwise have done. Everyone knows that a wide angle shot of a room will be a...

    Beginner Newbie lenses

Hi Froggi, Lenses can be expensive things, so I'd recommend you play for a while before you spend. Find an understanding mate, try your local camera club, who may have some you can borrow/beg, or you can hire them - plenty of places rent out lenses for the weekend. Or for a really cheap option...

    Non UK Iceland weather

We went in November. Mostly grey and overcast with occasional snow showers - except for one glorious day which happened to be when we were at Jokulsarlon (do go - it's well worth the trip) - blazing sunshine.

    Stonehenge

If you don't mind being some distance from the stones, there is track you can go down out of hours. You have to be on the A303, heading from west to east, it's on the left just over the brown of the hill. You can't do it from the east as there is no right turn.

    New, updated website..

ALL links worked, nice transition between images and the galleries all responded fine. Nice site.

    Camouflage gear

Found out in St. Lucia that wearing Camo is a criminal offence - and they take it seriously

    Focusing in low light

Then I'm with Phil. AF isn't magic - it's arithmetic. The camera just checks the difference in the colour value across the edge - the greater the numerical difference between pixels, the greater the contrast. Your eye has an adaptive supercomputer behind it and is far better at seeing edges...

    Beginner cannon lens 18-55ml

Put the background as far away as you can, move the glasses as close the camera as the lens will focus, keep it at the 18mm end. I'd nudge the ISO up a bit if you want to 'freeze' the water. By placing the water pour nearer the camera, you reduce the depth of field (the 18-55 has a minimum...

    Focusing in low light

Just asking - did you check which focus point your camera was using? I've been caught out before when I've changed it and forgotten to set it back. Remember also that the size of sensor covered by the focus point is quite small, so you are trying to get a high-contrast edge in that small space

    Camouflage gear

I don't think it matters unless you are dealing with exceptionally nervous species. Anything that breaks up the outlines is fine. Good point on Jack Pyke over military camo (I have both) is that the fabric is brushed, making it much quieter when you move. The bad news is that it doesn't wick at...

Beginner Taking photos inside a shop

If they won't play ball, wait for a dark evening and shoot the window from outside - which is, after all, where it's been designed to be viewed from. If you're standing on a public street, they have few grounds for complaint.
