    HDD or SSD to backup?

In my own setup, I only use SSDs for "live" data -- because they are significantly faster. However, for backup, I excluselively use HDDs. Three reasons: 1) Capacity - I use 8Tb drives (I now have 3) 2) Price - a significant saving for high volumes of data 3) Reliability - though HDDs can and do...

    dropped lens in case/box

    That's a professional-grade lens -- it'll take far worse...not that you should test that, you understand... :)

The GAS confessional - all who suffer are welcome. :)

Just noticed that Clifton Camera are offering 3 yr interest-free--and Fujifilm are running a trade-in bonus of £450 too. I'm going to have to make a decision on that lens now...

    Digital Medium Format Thread

Finally time to let my 5Dii go? Less than 3,000 actuations on it (long story). Really helpful that you posted this promotion--thank you.

The GAS confessional - all who suffer are welcome. :)

I missed that 24 month interest-free option. Now I have a real problem! I think I am safe, since I can't decide between the 32-65mm or the 45-100mm as my only lens. There are times when procrastination is my best friend :)

The GAS confessional - all who suffer are welcome. :)

MAJOR Gas attack this evening--£5500 for the GFX100S is a real bargain...resist, resist!

More gas pressure relief...I grabbed a 2nd-hand XF 10-24mm (original version) from Wex. The price of these have come down a long way. Fine lens, based on my initial tests.

Do I really need a Nas?

I take the same approach. I do have two NAS in-house, but I have three different backup drives for all the data on them. I've had RAID-1 and RAID-5 systems in the past; there are two problems with them: a) spotting that a drive has dropped out, for whatever reason b) relying on the degraded...

    Monitor alternative

I'd suggest this: Dell U2419H UltraSharp 24 Inch Full HD (1920x1080) Monitor, 60Hz, IPS, for £165 or so. It comes colour-calibrated as standard, covers 99% of sRGB, and is an IPS panel. You do lose the 16:10 aspect ratio--like most monitors today, this is 16:9 ratio.

    Shared bandwidth

Bob, The shared bandwidth approach makes sense also when any use of the bandwidth is likely to be very short in duration, followed by a pause before being used again. This allows multiple devices to interleave their traffic over the lanes, each effectively enjoying the benefit of maximum...

    Shared bandwidth

My understanding is that when bandwidth is shared (perhaps several SATA drives all connected via the same set of lanes) then all of the bandwidth is available to any device which is operating, if all the rest are not doing anything.

    Shared bandwidth

It depends. Each motherboard will have a fixed number of PCIe lanes, which are allocated to various sockets. In an ideal world, all the sockets would have their own dedicated lanes. However, there are rarely enough of these lanes, and so the board manufacturers have to make choices. One approach...

    Filming frame rates - confusion.

I've found 23.98 fps at 1080 and 4K gives fine results on my X-T2 -- but when I experimented with 25 and 30, I really didn't see any significant difference (all experiments shot in daylight). I settled on 23.98 fps in the hope that it would keep files sizes in check, at least a little.

    Old Lenses - Thinking Aloud

I think you'll enjoy the 50mm with your X-T3. I've got a few old Zuiko primes, from the days when I used an OM-1 and an OM-2, and bought an adapter for Fuji X mount. Once you've told your camera to "shoot without lens" you'll be good to go. As you say, the focusing ring on these old lenses is a...
