Paper for printing black and white

Chipper, there's an awful lot said - yes, pigment has the edge but modern good quality dye inks are pretty good. Easy to get hung up about "archival".

Which composition works best for you?

Another stab, I find the Golden Mean often works well.......there must be a reason it's stuck around for so long!

Paper for printing black and white

Late to this, but as a rule, dye printers have an edge for glossy/semi-gloss papers. As a test, try downloading profiles for the Pro300 and doing soft-proof comparisions. I prefer matte papers but I suspect you might find that rather going down the fascinating paper choice rabbit hole, working...

    Nikon D3s

A delight ergonomically, gives truly glorious images (I think the massive pixels really help), beautifully built. Less good? AF is very good indeed but not quite up to D5 level. It is amazing in low light but above say 6400 needs to be properly exposed to be really clean . 12800 is probably the...

How do you shoot birds in flight?

Having seen the thread title I was going to make a very naughty comment about a 12 bore being best, but then saw Stevejack's post - extremely lucid and some very good thinking there. Thanks.

    NX Studio vs Elements

For dodge and burn and cloning and many other things GIMP is first class and free. Particularly good at what one might call trad airbrushing/re-touching. Darktable is a free LR alternative, hugely powerful and many useful modules. Rawtherapee the same, you can get very sophisticated with...

    NIK Silver Efex

You can run the free download as a standalone. I go through phases of loving and hating it, it can produce amazing results but tends to be heavy handed.

Inkjet printing on 300gsm watercolour paper

I've printed onto various uncoated papers and the results vary between gorgeous and dire. Why not see what yr local art shop has on offer which catches your eye and have a play?

    Stoopid pigeon question...

I saw no worms change beaks! I reckon they are pigeon perves. But thanks! Should have stopped down a tweak to get the heads in focus, would have been quite an nice image then....

    Stoopid pigeon question...

caught these two this morning.....now, I know zip about birds - is the left one a juvenile or are they different species? Interesting either way, they were having a good snog earlier!

Canon Digital Photo Professional 4 = frustration!

Yes, if you can run PSP without it I really wouldn't bother. By contrast, Nx Studio is quick and reliable, although it doesn't offer a huge amount of adjustements. Jpeg rendering is usually less to my taste than darktable but not always....

    How many print and frame?

For the saving over new I would go new. Printers can be unreliable and a warranty is worth it. Many other papers to choose from, Hmule are top dollar. Innova do some very good stuff, Permajet and PurelyPaper are great retailers. Permajet very helpful technically, PP excellent on price and lovely...

Canon Digital Photo Professional 4 = frustration!

I use DPP because I work with a mixture of Nx-Studio, darktable and GIMP (go figure) and opening a JPG/TIFF with it is the easiest way of feeding PSP, which is excellent. But I wouldn't rate it much otherwise.

ColorChecker - When to use for static lighting? Every shoot?

If you are that thorough, you sound a go-to guy for false teeth! I assume that's what you need the matching for? In which case, remember to take into account viewing conditions at the dental lab - supply them a viewing box perhaps?
