Thanks for the comments guys. And yes Chuck, there is a reason, although maybe not the best one.... I took that shot as we were about to leave the restaurant, and i was doing the 'pick up the camera and check the settings and that it's switched on' thing that i tend to do. So just fiddling...

Plenty of kingfishers to be found along the Thames, with a lot between Reading and Pangbourne. I saw three of them flying in tight formation a few weeks ago but they were gone before my hands got the message from my brain to start lifting the camera...

One thing that I don’t think has been mentioned in the thread (apologies if it has) is to see how any camera feels in your hands before you buy, and this is especially true for someone who’s previous experience is limited. Dslr’s vary a lot in size and weight, and you need something that fits...
