Many thanks for the feedback, Ruth. I do have another shot without the seagulls; I posted the one with because I thought they added something to the sky, but you're right that they're really too small to be effective in that regard.

Hi Trevr, thanks for the comments (numbers added now). I agree photo 2 does need something to lift the boats. I've shot from that location twice and this is the better of the two attempts, but maybe a different composition is what's needed.

For thinking about the aperture, you can use a website like this: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html to calculate what the depth of field will be. You can also print off some charts or get a depth of field calculator on a smartphone too. That'll help you visualise the size of the focus plane...
