Looks like tricky lighting but the trick is to make the subject stand out from the background, and the way to do that is to increase the speed and reduce the f-stop to say f4 or less. Using a long lens helps that process, and you will see your subject jump out from the background.

I would suggest that you do know something about video, as the basics are the same. Composition, lighting and view point, the fact that the camera remains recording instead of taking one image is the only difference. You have a Mac so I assume that comes with it's own video editing software...
