Not so much of a welcome ....

This isn't so much of a welcome thread, more of a welcome back. I joined the forum early 2010 as photography had become something of a passion for me, first shooting with a entry level Canon (can't remember the model) and later progressing to a 40D with a collection of lenses. I loved that 40D...

A few from the old town

Hi  and thank you. It was the colours that drew me to take the third one, along with the second. I'm a bit of an obsessive over straight lines and the place is a nightmare, nothing seems to be dead straight, perfectly level or vertical, but I think the colours and the scenes of every day...

A few from the old town

I haven't been able to post much recently for various reasons, mainly due to work. Here's a few I took the other weekend in the Bur Dubai, down near the creak. I couldn't resist the last shot. Dubai by Alex, on Flickr Dubai by Alex, on Flickr Dubai by Alex, on Flickr Dubai by Alex, on Flickr

    Thundering By

Two SD70s hauling 153 wagons with another SD70 in rear go thundering past heading north through the Saudi desert, just south of Ha'il. Into the Dust by Alex, on Flickr And a picture of it on approach Desert Train by Alex, on Flickr

    Rising above the rocks

I'm not sure if this photo works or not. I had seen a similar shot on you tube and was trying to capture the detail in the foreground without the image being blown out by the sun peering over the rock. Rising Sun by Alex, on Flickr

    Oasis in the desert

Yes I agree and the colour of the sand really is that rich and orange. It's incredible to see with the mountains rising up out of the desert.

    Oasis in the desert

It's surprising how much can grow in the desert. I took these two shots about 30km from where I live. As well as dates and olives the local farmers manage to grow wheat and corn in big circular fields in the sand. I love the way the desert meets the mountains. They make a great backdrop to...

    Finsch’s Wheatear

In Saudi, in the rockier part of one of the deserts not far from where I live.

    Finsch’s Wheatear

Ac According to Wikipedia (my source for all knowledge) its a member of the fly catcher family. You find them in the Middle East and stretching from Turkey to Pakistan and Afghanistan. It's name, apparently is a corruption of the phrase 'white arse' because they have a white rear end :)

    Finsch’s Wheatear

I'm not a bird photographer and only managed to catch this one by chance. He was sitting on a rock and let me get fairly close before flying off. Unfortunately I only had an 18-135mm so these are a bit of a tight crop and I didn't quite get the focus on the eyes. Wheatear by Alex, on Flickr...

    A few from Edinburgh tonight

A fine set Simon. I like the feel of #1 and the contrast between the softness of the sky and the stark outlines of the city structures. #4 is my favourite, reminds me of a French guy on You Tube, Serge Ramelli. His photos sometimes look too over processed but I think you've got it spot on.

    As big as it gets

It's an interesting place, although not a true reflection of the Gulf States. There's plenty to see and visit but you need to do some exploring. Are you staying at a resort hotel or in Dubai city itself? The Metro is the best way to travel about and very easy to use. Public transport uses a...
