A very rough but possible solution is to set the neutral picture profile and reduce the contrast setting. This should get you a bit more detail in the shadows using SOOC JPEGs.
Other lenses to consider are the Sigma 17-70mm, Sigma 17-50mm, Canon 18-135mm. Buy the lens you need not because of the resale value. The market changes all the time but no point having a lens which doesn’t have focal range to capture the images you want.
