My initial thoughts were that the lens was front focussing but I tested the focussing afterwards and it is fine. I tend to belive it's a mixture of factors, proximity of the subject, very shallow DoF and user error in me maybe not holding the shutter down properly. If nothing else it has...

And just to confuse things more, here is the image full size showing the AF point positions. The center point isn't even close to the part of the image that is sharp I am putting this all down to user error but I would like to know what I did so I can correct it :)

Jo, DoF affects the points to the front and back of the focus point, not the area surrounding the point if that is what you are describing here.

I found this link that demonstrates what happenes to the focal plane when you recompose Looking at this I would expect the focal point to be behind the subject but as he states in his article it's possible I may have moved backwards or forwards as well as refocussing.

Over the last couple of months I have had the same problems with FF, it doesn't seem to be anywhere near as stable as it was.

Yes I had the shutter to fast for most ofthe day but I wanted to try and get shots other than the standard slow shutter panning on straights, although I did revert to that in the end :) For me cutting the wheel off in #6 doesn't really matter, I don't think it detracts any from the image...

Yes I found it much easier in the afternoon especially shooting around the mountain and Halls bends. Not sue what it was like over at Charlies in the mornong, the furtheset I got was Mansfield.
