Looking at this I would expect the focal point to be behind the subject but as he states in his article it's possible I may have moved backwards or forwards as well as refocussing.
I thought you had hit the nail on the head there but I've just been back and checked the EXIF info and the camera was set to One Shot AF rather than AI Servo.

Yes I had the shutter to fast for most ofthe day but I wanted to try and get shots other than the standard slow shutter panning on straights, although I did revert to that in the end :)
For me cutting the wheel off in #6 doesn't really matter, I don't think it detracts any from the image...
Yes I found it much easier in the afternoon especially shooting around the mountain and Halls bends. Not sue what it was like over at Charlies in the mornong, the furtheset I got was Mansfield.
