I went to Barcelona last year and had no problems while there, I was concerned too with all the stories you hear of. I did buy the most un camera like bag I could find and nearly everyone in the city carries bags ,handbags and rucksacks on their front so I did the same. Never leave bags etc...

+1 for the Lowepro Vertex 200 very comfortable. jpwild, I bought a tamrac bottle holder that will just go through one of the side slides.
