I hadn't thought about upgrading my kit lens, i did think that perhaps it would be a bit wasteful to replace something which seems to do the job ok. My budget isn't huge and i don't mind spending £150 on a lens i just figured that the widest aperture for the money...

Thanks for your input, I'm quite impatient which is why I use auto mode. I want every picture to be perfect without the faffing about, but I guess I should enjoy playing with the settings to truly get the best photo possible.
