    going to try strobe photography

When I say "during the exposure" I mean when the shutter is open and the image is being taken (ie when the sensor is being "exposed" to light). I know it looks like the pop-up fires during the exposure because it all happens so fast, but what you're seeing is the pop-up sending data and...

    going to try strobe photography

Um - yes, but you said this:- and that isn't how it works. In commander mode, the on-board/pop-up flash does indeed trigger the remote - it just doesn't do it during the exposure. The camera uses the pop-up to send instructions to the remotes including power level, and when to flash. It...

    going to try strobe photography

That's not how commander mode works though - the master flash (the pop-up in your case) does not flash during the exposure. I'm not sure where you got your info for the Godox triggers and the batteries they use. The Godox X1R-N receiver for your SB900 takes two AA's. Godox XPro...

    going to try strobe photography

Ah well if it's tabletop/objects I really recommend Martin Botvidson's channel for some inspiration:- https://www.youtube.com/user/botvidsson You can get close to this for the smaller objects with speed-lights btw - it's just harder and a bit more DIY :).

    going to try strobe photography

Hi Bazza, All but the most basic Nikon DSLRs support using the pop-up as a commander. This is not the slave mode you have been using to trigger your SB900, but a way to control and trigger up to 2 groups of remote flashes off-camera (and use the master if you wish). You'll find the option...

    Heavy duty backdrop stands

Something like this will hold up a vinyl roll https://www.lencarta.com/all-products/backgrounds/hakutatz-3x3m-background-support-stand-system and I used one like it and the same 6m roll of grey vinyl for years. I still have it but as I was able to just paint the wall grey in my new space, I...

Godox V1 - pre purchase discussion

Unlike the AD200 round head, this just has a regular straight flash tube in it. It produces a slightly more even light pattern but this seems to be down to the finer grained Fresnel on the front tbh, and a bit of diffusion over a regular speed-light will smooth out any hotpsots. It isn't...

    New rental studio

It was the Superfasts that started me taking my own gear to studios: I had read Joe McNally's books and just wanted to shoot dancers :). Almost all studios had rough old Bowens heads, or maybe some Elinchrom BXR500's but never anything fast enough to freeze motion. I had some success putting...

    New rental studio

If only it worked for cars... now if you can arrange to buy a house up north and transport it down south, you'd have a solid business :) Mind you, I did shoot at a location in Shoreditch earlier in the year and the rate was about £250/day so not too much of a difference tbh...

    New rental studio

Those old school incandescent lights sure were big Garry :p I hire this studio quite a lot:- https://www.atlas-studios.co.uk/gallery A space the size of a football field - with very long power cables :p £130 per day. The studio does have some old Bowens lights, but I don't use them...

    New rental studio

Just to be clear - for £15 per hour, I expect a room with power and a backdrop.

    New rental studio

Hey Richard that sounds like a really useful space. I've rented a number of studios in my time and here's what I'd love to see. I do have a small studio on top of my house, but if I need to shoot full length, or need some more space for light control, I'll rent a studio. Now! Look at the...

    Rotolight Neo 2 for Weddings

At night, yes you'll get away with 10 foot at high Iso, wide open with an LED panel. I should have added, that the Lencarta lights come with a battery, charger etc which is why they're a bit more than the Viltrox light that doesn't (in that listing: some deals include the battery etc).

    Godox ad200 rear curtain sync

Just a thought, and a bit of along shot tbh, as you had it working with the Yongnuo triggers, but just in case coincidence is playing up: make sure your shutter speed is low enough for rear curtain to make sense: above x-sync speeds (when the rear curtain starts moving before the front curtain...
