Beginner Guide to best settings for subject

One wonderful thing about digital photography is that you don't waste film! So you you can practice all you want and just delete what turns out wrong! (remembering to understand why it turned out wrong). Of course, while you are learning, if the shots you are taking are important, then I'd...

I want to learn how to become a great portrait photographer

For what it's worth Shaylou I'm in total agreement with WinkyPhoto. You have some great shots on Flikr and from a technical point of view you should be confident in your ability. As an example, the photograph of Larry Underwood is great - composition, exposure - you've caught a great moment. I...

I want to learn how to become a great portrait photographer

The technical details of lighting and exposure are important but far more important is the need to convey to the viewer what you want to express of the person whose portrait you are taking. That, to me, is the essence of great portrait photography and what sets it part from your high street...

    Beginner Newbie

As mint says above just get out there and take photographs. If your camera has 'P' mode start off with that so at least you'll get good exposures while you learn composition. And you sound as though you already have a project as an incentive - taking photos of your motorbike in various...

Filters and replacement batteries on Ebay?

Can't comment on filters but I'd recommend Hahnel batteries -they've always been OK as good back-up batteries for me.

Unable to parse JPEG data. What does that mean?

I've had this problem before and what fixed it for me was to open the file in another application. In my case this was Preview on my MAC. I then exported the file as a JPG and CS6 opened it OK after that. Not sure what you can use if you're Windows based though.

    Hot Shoe mounted viewfinder

Thanks Steve. I like your work too. You really embrace the past what with the rockabilly music and your photographic work. I've embraced digital but feel we've lost something from the film age (particularly aperture settings on lenses!). We seem to have the same interests too - I'm a semi-pro...

    70-200 F4 IS / Non IS

If you can afford it go for IS. It'll probably save the shot one day and be worth it. But if your camera handles noise well, then upping the ISO to get a better shutter speed shouldn't be an issue.

    Canon or Sigma 24-105

I'm very satisfied with the optical quality of my Canon 24-105. It's a great, versatile carry round lens. A couple of points (forgive me if you've already thought of this) that may help :- 1) You'll be using the lens on a crop camera so you'll be losing a bit at the wide angle and the zoom. 2)...

    Help me choose - New 24-70 f4L, or Used 24-70 f2.8L MK1

Hope these thoughts aren't too late. I hired a 24-70 f2.8 for a wedding gig last year (my 24-105 broke a week before!). Anyhoo, this was a MkI version but the optics were superb. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I could afford it. Even though my 24-105 is stabilised another big plus for me for...

    Hot Shoe mounted viewfinder

Thanks for the replies essexash and woof woof. After looking around I've come to the same conclusion. The main issue is focusing for me. I've looked at a product called The Clearviewer too which is basically a loupe without any cover. I've decided to just use the LCD screen. If I ever see a...

    Hot Shoe mounted viewfinder

Hi, Just bought a secondhand Panasonic DMC-LX3 as my carry round camera (the best camera you own). I knew it didn't have a viewfinder but was impressed by the spec for the price and thought "I'll just buy a viewfinder to sit on the hot-shoe". Should have checked the price of those!! Found...

Beginner New to photography looking for advice

On the topic of HDEW cameras I was going to buy my Canon 5D from them as they were by far the best price at the time. The 'grey import' issue did put me off though and I ended up getting it from Jessops who had an offer on and i got cash back too by buying through Quidco. Still paid a bit more...
