Sorry Chaz! I'm a relative noob, both here and in terms of photography.
I have a 1000d that I've used for the past 2yrs and have really enjoyed it. I see no reason to upgrade it yet (it's more than good enough for a rank amateur like me). I only have the kit lens and the nifty...
Has anyone tried one yet?
According to photozone.de's review:
"...starting at f/4 it beats or at least matches alternative products including the more expensive Canon EF-S 17-55m f/2.8 USM IS."

Hi Bumph - thanks for taking the time to do that - much appreciated. Being an amateur I made a typical error - I hadnt checked my settings on the camera before taking the shot. I took several shots and moved on before later realising I had my WB set for tungsten (from the previous evenings...
cheers guys - yes St Lucia does lend itself to some great photography - just a shame Im a rank amateur! still, im happy with the shots as a newb.
suggs - thanks for the info. the st lucian's dont call those fish wrasse though (wrasse wasnt on their fish charts). I thought "wrasse" but when...
Birds aren't my normal thing, but considering the opportunity that presented itself I thought it would be rude not to get the pic! Mrs Hummingbird didn't seem to mind - she stayed put. According to the resort she's nested there for the past two years and has had her picture taken by many of...
The 1000d has "Partial" Metering which is Spot Metering, albeit a slightly bigger spot. That is all.
Considering the AF points of both cameras are around the center of where you point, I don't really see you missing out on too many shots through the inability to focus with the 1000d just...
Took these two with my P&S (Ixus 870is with waterproof housing so I can use it whilst diving as well) ):

If the outlay was within £50 I would take the 450d. Else I would (and have) choose the 1000d. I got the 1000d for £269 - for me that price made it a no brainer.
But as the thread was regarding the OPs very first DSLR I'd hazard a guess that he/she wouldn't know what it was even if the camera had it / or knew how to use it to their advantage / or know when to use it to get a better pic.
My point is that either would make a great first DSLR. In fact...
I have an IXUS 870IS (SD880 in the US) for P&S duty. It's easily the best P&S camera I've owned.
As to what it is capable of - have a look at some of these:

Ken Rockwell loves it:

blimey there seems to be some real "interesting" opinion related to the 1000d on here.
I was after a 450d but missed out on the cashback, which in itself caused the current distinct shortage problem (try getting a 450d for decent money now).
Instead I found a brand-new 1000d (inc Kit-lens...
