Woodpecker and Weasel

I just saw this on Facebook. Amazing isn't it? I wish stuff like that happened in front of me.

Incredible.
Note to self - always carry camera with you.

Note to self - always carry camera with you.

Although ...
Reminds me of an icy cold day earlier in the year when I was in a hide watching for any wildlife in the freezing conditions.
After a while I put the camera down and with hands in pockets to warm them up, went to the other side of the hide to look out and see if anything was about ... a stoat stopped and raised up on his back legs, looked at me as he was crossing the frozen water.
Me one side of the hide ... camera the other side ... by the time we joined forces, yep he had gone! :banghead:

I thought it was photoshoped for a bit. But the story seems genuine the weasel is not just getting a ride but actually attacking that woodpecker which is just flying away to save his life.
What an incredible catch!

Viral? Via social media? Ah, but is that a green woodpecker or a black and white one? :exit:

TP,best place on the planet for splitting hairs ;)

Saw this in Rich's link earlier and Mrs Nod has just show it to me on Farsewipe. Great spot! I've got a short sequence of a magpie standing on a lamb's head with both shouting at a passing fox but nothing quite as red in tooth and claw as the woodstoater.

Just out of curiosity why do you think it belongs in talk nature?
Because one of the creatures involved is a mammal?

Hi Brian, thanks for the reply but I was hoping for a reply from Marc.
yes one of the creatures is a mammal, the other is a bird! I am trying to understand the thought process that cancelled a post in OOF at 09.35 and a post in Birds at 13.54 but allowed another post in talk nature at 10.27

It is a good job you put a link to this thread after closing the one in the bird section Marc because without it I would never have found this thread.

Why on earth would it be anywhere but talk nature? Its a discussion about a photo of nature, not being shared by the photographer who took it (ergo NOT open for critique) so not appropriate for any of the photo sharing sections but still photography related so not oof either.

As Yvonne said, Talk Nature is the only logical place for it. The Photo sections are fr people to post their own photos for feedback/critique.

Thanks for the replies guy's, Mods are just like buses aint they? they come along in two's LOL

Mmmm. I'm afraid I dont see your logic, If this post belonged anywhere it is wild & free! (both bird & mammal)
I know it matters not a jot what I think but I think the first post on the subject in "OOF" at 09.30 should have been allowed to continue without any interference.

Wherever the thread should be the image is amazing. As someone's already said, I'd settle for a woodpecker or a stoat but................

Indeed, an incredible grab of an event that we have no idea of how frequently it happens. How often do stoats attempt to get a bird I wonder?

Those are Photo sharing sections, they are specifically there for getting feedback/critique on your photos.

but I think the first post on the subject in "OOF" at 09.30 should have been allowed to continue without any interference.

As there is a photograph that is being discussed,we felt it was more appropriate being discussed in the photography themed part of the forums.

OK, look, its a fascinating subject based on nature, so it could have been left in OOF, but surely the sort of members for whom it might be most fascinating post in the nature sections, so far better in there. There is only ONE nature discussion forum, this one, Talk Nature, the rest [such as wild and free as you mention] are for sharing your own photos for comments and critique, not for sharing someone elses and not for discussion topics. So the logic is actually very simple and straightforward, not our fault if you inhabit your own little illogical world :p :exit:

Keep up it's a Weasel :D

It MUST be true, just been on BBC News!

:withstupid: good job it was no one from here who took it, @BRASH critique would have closed the bird section for good on that one

Correct. It's an embarrassment, like Fracs stuff, well not quite as bad actually.

And just what is wrong with my world?.

He appeared to have a Canon 300mm 2.8 attached to his camera when interviewed on TV. He popped his built-in flash up when taking a photo for the camera...with his 300mm 2.8 attached :)

apparently the weasel fell off and the woody got away
