Cheap film camera for travel holiday

Yes
Just thinking about cameras and stuff.

I've booked myself on a holiday to New York/Boston for the end of October. I'm going to be taking my digital SLR with me and a couple of smaller lenses. The plan is to get out on foot and just explore and take photos of my surroundings.

As I've previously mentioned, I have a hankering for expensive film cameras (who doesn't) but as I don't have much money left they will have to wait for another day.

So would it be worth while picking up an older 35mm camera of the flea bay and taking a few shots with that? If so what would you suggest?

Cheers

What digital gear are you taking? Maybe get a film slr that can use the same lenses. Can save money and put the extra towards a better camera, and also have less to take with you? :)

Digital will be a Canon 5d Mark 3, 17-40 F4 and 24-70 F2.8, I'm going to leave the 70-200 at home as its a beast, plus New york is pretty close up for photographs i should imagine.

All Canon EF lenses will fit all Canon EF Bodies, so anything from an EOS 600 on should work.

Ef lenses will fit in any eos camera, whether it's film or digital. Efs won't though. I bought an eos 5 on ebay for 25 odd quid and I can use all my L series canon lenses that I used to use with my digital gear. Incidentally I also have the 17-40 and 24-70 but haven't got round to using them on my eos 5 yet.

Canonet QL17, one of the nicest little rangefinders you could buy!

Only you can answer that.

For me, the answer would simply be no, as a 135 format camera doesn't do what I want to do in the way that I want to do it. For you, the answer could be different, but you may need to identify what you're looking to get out of such a camera.

A nice little Voigtlander vitomatic ii, maybe there will be one in the classifieds over the weekend, maybe. :naughty:

All good suggestions thanks. I'm counting down the days and just pondering stuff in the interim.

The reason I was considering adding a film camera was just a novel side thing, maybe it would get something that the 5d wouldn't. But at the end of the day I don't want to be lugging around too much stuff. My constant craving for shiny objects and having no money doesn't help either.

Ill fifth that one as well. They are a cracking little camera with pin sharp lens and they will fit in a coat pocket.

XA owner here. Great little camera. Whatever you get, get it in advance in case the seals need doing.

I have to say I'm blown away by the quality of the photos those little XA2s produce. Just been looking through a few Flickr pages (inc @simon ess and @NickT) and they really are good for such a tiny little camera. Especially as they go on ebay for £15 to £20! Might have to keep my eye out for one! :D

Olympus Trip.

Easy operation, easy to carry (so you will carry it), cheap, cool looks ... what more could you want? :)

Olympus Trip 35

The Trip is a lovely travel camera. I've got three! Well, I have one, my wife the second and the third is likely to end up as a gift.

The only thing I'd advise is that the shutter will probably stick and the light seals will need replacing. Dead easy to do. There are good instructions here. I've replaced the body covering (ordered the light seals at the same time).

They're built like bricks and once refurbished, will last a lifetime.

Guess what my suggestion would be? Clue in my user name. Actually a Trip 35 is in some ways a nicer camera, with more zones of focus, a faster lens, and being battery free. I took mine last year to Poland. Downside compared to an XA/XA2 is you need a bigger pocket, and you have a lens cap to lose on the street.

My Trip 35 Album

I take my 50p XA2 around with me everywhere, all of the time. Fits in my jeans pocket. Defaults to a perfect focus for street. Small and harmless looking for candid photography. Even has a timer on it for selfies (which the Trip 35 does not).

Loving my nikon af35 at the moment. It's a fix lens 35mm f2.8. It's point and shot so no setting, no manual focus but it has a useful focus gauge that give you an idea if it has focus on the right distance. I was looking for a lens cap for it and see some going for 10£ on ebay.

Advantage of the camera is that there is a filter thread so you can but a colour filter for more contrasty black and white and the meter is close to the lens so the filter won't skew your exposure. 35mm is a very nice all used focal too. And the lens is very sharp.

Are you more after a slr, a fixed lens with manual focus or a point and shot. Or anything cheap?

I've been using an eos 55 for a change from digi today. It's a great camera and as has been said ALL my lenses in my bag fit all my bodies.
That's what I'd look for. I paid £25 for mine with a grip.
