so, i've been looking to get a bit more serious with my storage backups recently as I have a jumble of hard drives so it's just a bit of a mess
I picked up a 20tb wd dual drive usb on black friday, set up in raid 1, I know raid isnt a backup...
shifting around terabytes of data is also really slow, and I have a bunch of hard drives i'd like to just centralise into one place, so I thought about a 5 bay enclosure and buying disks, but in the end I bought another one of the wd 20tb's, as the cost wasnt much more than 2 10tb disks- whether I use the case or just sell it and use the disks is still up for discussion
so now i'm thinking set it up as raid 0 for 20tb of really fast storage, and have that set up for hourly backups to the other unit, so, essentially making a 40tb (20tb usable) raid 10 set up with fast primary storage, and a full backup with time offset, so that if a file corrupts i'm not nuking my backup a la raid 1, I would have versioning and deleted file protection for as long as I have space on the backup disk, and the backup and main disks are separated so a fault with the hardware wouldnt wipe out both the primary and the backup- I also will probably have a third offsite backup with backblaze, as it's cheap enough, and my internet fast enough, that it's almost a no brainer
I can use my old 8tb external disks as deep storage archive drives, backed up as a pair and put one off site, maybe put them in the cloud in due course, and sell off any drives I dont need like the smaller 5tb's etc
