Cotswold Cameras

Oh and welcome to the madhouse - stick around - it's quite fun.

Now go take some photos and stick them up. Since we're in the same area they'll be interesting.

Here’s a quickie. I was trying to connect the 80D to my iMac via WiFi, and eventually succeeded. No more running around with flash cards ! I love being able to compose the shot, lighting, WB DoF, etc on the Mac, knowing exactly what the picture will look like. (The majority of my photography is antiques and product shots). I used 200ASA, an exposure of 2 seconds at f.14 (from memory). Untouched in Photoshop, save from exporting and shrinking to 72dpi for web. It needs a bit of work and cropping before it’s ready.

You know that you are evading tax. I know you are evading tax. Almost every poster on here knows it.

Stop kidding yourself.

" He that is without sin among you, let him cast a stone "

Stop preaching. It is not for you to 'Police' this thread. You are pi**ed off because the guy saved himself some money and you probably didn't. Live and let live.

So shall we stick to the point (Cotswold Cameras, in case anyone had forgotten), or shall I just re-register under a different name ?
Well, part of the deal with Cotswold Cameras is whether they're trading legally or on the black market. That's important to some people around here.

Your testimony indicates that CC are arranging things in such a manner that their customers are evading VAT. Probably most of those customers don't realise that, because they're given assurances, as you have been, that there is no VAT to pay and that CC will take care of any import duties. But that doesn't change the underlying reality which is that it's illegal.

Anyway, that's done and dusted now, and what you do about it is up to you and your morals. But if you stick around, there's a lot more to TP than you've experienced here.

Thanks. I appreciate that and am trying to move on, so I will stop posting in this thread, as I think I’ve said all I need to say.

As I emphasised from my first post, where and how you buy is a personal decision. I only wished to inform others about my experience with CC, not moralise or lecture. I don’t agree with you on the legal point, but this is really not up to me to prove. Let the buyer decide.

I hope what I’ve posted has been useful, and look forward to enjoying technical tips, etc. on the other Talk forums.

Over & out.

Nice - whats the vase - moorcraft?
Yeah, a small Moorcroft piece. I would have had to bounce and fill with flash, then process the RAW image to get something nowhere near as good with previous setup. Looks much better uncompressed (obvs!).

From Cotswold Cameras: "Our prices are the final cost to you. They include any applicable VAT, duties and other costs."

If that's the case then why don't the company provide you with a VAT receipt, as they are legally obliged to do?

That's a bloody high horse you're on. A mate of mine left here because of all the snide comments about buying grey. I've just bought an xt1 secondhand that came from digital Rev. What you going to call me (from behind a keyboard)?

Whatever I feel like.

However, you aren't the one trying to convince people that buying from a company is legit when it isn't.

PS - I hope you didn't pay full second hand market price for a grey import! :D

Whyever not? If a grey camera's out of warranty it's worth the same as a UK model out of warranty. They come from the same factory FFS.

If people are happy to buy grey imports and defraud HMRC unless they are caught fine, to each his own. It just makes the costs higher for everybody else.

Wrong way round - theres no import duty on Camera bodies into the UK (its 9% on lenses where they arent in a kit) - but VAt at 20% is payable on import (assuming the value is properly declared and it didnt arrive labeled as low value toy parts or anything dodgy like that)

of course not every import gets stopped , and not everyone voluntarily declares if theres isnt

Archie747. As I imported it, there is no VAT to pay. There will be import duty, but part of the deal is that Cotswold Cameras pay this.

The system works in the same way that you will see gift shops offering ‘Tax free’ purchases in the UK. Shop owners do not have to charge VAT on an item if the non-EU resident buyer takes it out of the EU within 30 days (and fills in the relevant forms). I’m just doing it the other way round.

Which is probably how the business models of grey importers works.

A mate of mine left here because of all the snide comments about buying grey.

That's a poor reason. Facts are facts, even if he didn't like them.
Surely he didn't HAVE to discuss or read the comments? TP isn't all about grey importers.

On the whole i don't have a problem with Grey dealers (geneally its the buyer thats the importer and its between them and their concience whether they pay the import duty/vat) .... i do however have an issue with dealers who deliberately mislead their buyers by pretending to be based in the uk but fullfilling orders from overseas ... in this regard at least cotswold are honest about where their product comes from , though the "we occasionally fulfil orders from our hong kong warehouse" leave a lot of wiggle room.

On the other hand they also state that " all our prices include applicable vat" but don't seem to be vat registered as far as i can tell ...

hmmmm, holy thread revival batman. Last week I ordered a D850 from Contswolds, assuming that duty is paid by the importer and the lower cost is down to tighter margins through lower overheads and the risk of having a third party warranty. I took some comfort in the fact that they seemed to have been around for several years, 7 days later, I'm waiting for the arrival so searched for more details on Cotswolds Cameras and here I am. Nobody can accuse me of joining to give a biased view one way or the other as I have been a member here for over decade, admittedly less active recently.

Anyway, I'll update with any news, good or bad!

If you wanted it next day then you should've ordered UK stock. Why don't you try call 01242 378248.

::ty: for your friendly and helpful response. :D

I didn't want it next day but was expecting some response and a delivery within a week, however I have just realised their website says 4-7 business days not calendar days.

I received a tracking number today so all looking good so far.

No problem, people often wonder whats going on with their order and expect immediate email responses, if there's a phone number and you're wondering what's going on, why not call it.

O dear. I hope it turns up soon. LIving near the Cotswolds, I checked their reviews out once and decided against. Did you use a credit card/

Thanks, I got a response on Friday saying they will "look into it" but it's still not here. Paid on Amex using Pay Pal so yes, it is protected. I checked the reviews and they were generally pretty good but I am currently wishing I'd used a normal shop or even bought one second hand.

I thought that if you use credit card via PayPal the cc protections don’t apply?

From PayPal site;

Buyer Protection
If your eligible purchase doesn’t arrive, or doesn’t match the seller’s description, we can reimburse you.

Well, I must confess, I assumed a credit card on Paypal was the same as a credit card direct. It looks like I have less protection than I thought. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
Indeed, I assumed that for years. Paypal do credit now so maybe that would change it. Anyway good luck with the delivery.

From PayPal site;

Yes there is definitely protection but not as strong as Article 75 gives for credit cards (lesson learned)

That’s true but it’s up to PayPal not the law so you have to go to court if they don’t agree.

From the Martin Lewis site :
“In 2016, PayPal introduced Paypal Credit in the UK: a digital line of credit you can add to your PayPal wallet. Using funds from this pot to pay online gives you both PayPal protection and Section 75 coverage.”

Also problems with Amazon 3rd party sellers :(.
