I've just renewed my passport for a holiday in November. Thanks to Brexit we are now categorised as third-country nationals.

People are being caught out by their 10 year passports and refused entry. It has to have been issued less than 10 years before the arrival date and must be valid for at least 3 months after departure date .The following costs are for adults.

I paid £82.50 for an online application but it's going up to £88.50 on April 11th. Do it by post and it's £100. Fast-track will set you back £166. You can pay £5 to have your old passport sent back in some secure way but I paid £3.80 for special delivery & signed for. I've had an Email confirming receipt and another Email confirming that my application has been approved and is in the process of being issued. I should jolly well think so being ex RNVR and christened (had no say in that ) on HMS Excellent (shore establishment-gunnery school) Whale Island,Portsmouth. :)

The digital photo must have been taken within a month of applying. I went to Sainsburys to have my photo taken and with two digital photos (I stood infront of a white board and had to take off my specs) I was given a code so it can be digitally read by the passport office. That was £14.99 which took me back a little. I had two spare photos from my old passport but they woukldn't do

yep TCNs thanks to Roy from Preston
ironically EU citizens can come to the UK as visitors better than we can go to the EU
way to go Roy you fat w****r

My wife nearly got caught out by the 10 year rule as her passport had 10 years, plus nearly 9 months carried over from her previous one. We’re going to an EU country in a few months time and she wouldn’t have been able to fly. So she’s had to apply for a new one, even though there was still plenty of time left on her existing one. Apparently hundreds of UK passport holders are getting caught out with this every year.

Btw, if you do an online submission you can do your own photos at home using a mobile phone camera, as long as you follow the guidelines.

Does this new ruling apply only to EU travel or global travel?

Hasn’t this rule been in force since Brexit? Do people read the t&cs when booking a holiday? Last time I was in a travel agent they had a notice regarding the new/not so new rules.

I’m sure this problem? has been in the news every springtime the last few years.

Seems that you can book a trip, give the holiday company your passport details, check in, go through security at the airport but it only gets revealed as an issue when you get to the boarding gate.

It might well have been in force since Brexit changed the rules but I don’t think it’s been very well publicised. I certainly wasn’t aware of it until the recent BBC news article I linked to and it seems it’s catching lots of others out too. And to be fair, how many people book a holiday through a travel agent rather than online nowadays?

Most of the holiday company advice seems to be aimed at needing three or six months validity left on your passport, rather than it being valid for too long… and I’m still not exactly sure why this has to be an issue for the EU community.

I work in a Photoshop that will do a digital passport coded image for you. It produces a card copy and a code which (after following a link) is a simple process. The image can be also downloaded onto your computer for any further use (bus pass, driving docs, agency pass etc). This costs just £9.99. For an extra £10, staff can go on line and complete the process for you (a saving over the PO). All that is required is the standard cost applicable for the new passport, as well as the PO cost to mail the old one back. The new passport is not activated until receipt of the old one.

I see there's another system.. EES...to be introduced, after many delays, at the end of this year, which will make life much easier for those on short stays.Eg..business and holiday trips.

Agree, this has been in place since the Brexit deal was signed in 2019/2020, guess that Covid travel restrictions was one of the reasons it has not been in many people's consciousness.

Yep and I’m not sure why it’s just raised its head again. All post Brexit passports are 10 years exactly. Any passport issued after 2015 is OK for this year but this is going to happen every year until all passports have been issued post brexit.
I honestly can’t see why people have missed it, Simon Calder has been banging on about it for years.
