Restoring faded colour prints

I have many old colour prints in family albums going back many decades. Many of them are badly faded. Is there a chemical or physical way to restore the original colour? If not then I suppose they need to be digitally restored. What is the best software to use for this? I am somewhat familiar with Photoshop and GIMP, but is there something that will so this job better? And is there somewhere a description or tutorial on the best techniques to use for this task? There are also thousands of colour slides (many of them stereo) taken by my father. I expect these will need similar restoration.

All advice on how best to proceed with these tasks welcome!
