Yes
Watameter !
Just bought one to go with my Kershaw 630, it appears to work, it still needs to be calibrated but its not far off.
Will it help me, well I don't know.
Do any of you fellows use of have used one ?

Heard of 'em. Never used one.

I used to have one. After some time, I sold it - I had just got better at estimating distances and didn't need it any more.

To estimate a distance I think whether I would reach the subject if I laid down on the ground. I'm just under 5 ft 11in so near enough to 6 feet.

Beyond that distance it becomes less and less critical. It's useful to understand hyperfocal distance - an app can be used.

I was given one as a Christmas present around 1970. At the time I had a Balda Baldini camera and the rangefinder was quite useful.

I know it is old, it suits the 1950s Kershaw camera I put it on, have not taken any photographs with the aid of the Watameter so far.
We have done some calculations in the house, the wife was very helpful, so a coffee mug on a table measured at 3.5 feet, and with the tape measure the watameter was 2 inches off, a few other similar test showed the same thing.
I am going to be busy this weekend but soon as that is done I will do some field testing.
Thing is, its a fascinating wee piece of equipment looks great and does work.

Is the datum of the Watameter aligned with the film plane?

I have a Voigtlander rangefinder and a Photopia. Both are calibrated in feet, OK for my Bessa I and Vito II but no use for a couple of folders with metre focussing scales. I recently tried to sell the Photopia but no luck. Actually what I wanted was to swap the Photopia for a finder calibrated in metres, if anyone is interested. It seems to be accurate but I haven't checked scientifically.

I seem to remember that on mine the knurled wheel used to align the images had another smaller one inside it.

The scale was fixed to one and the optics to the other.

By holding one still and slightly turning the other you can adjust the calibration.
