Nikon Z* mirrorless

worst day since owning the camera , should have been a good day out yesterday but Mother Nature decided not to play ball .. left ours in the morning very nice clear blue skies ,warm so went out in t shirt got to anglesey and it was bloody freezing very strong cold wind blowing off the sea with a light mist got some hardly worth posting shots of a woodchat shrike and lots of terns in flight but a combination of grey birds against a grey sky has done nothing to enhance them might find a few with a bit of contrast . think my lad might have done better with my Olympus .. oh well you can't win them all

The TC is what most want, its been a huge hit with the 400 and 600 model, its a unique feature only available with Nikon, having to remove the lens, putting on a TC does not seem much but in wildlife photography it is a missed shot, even for sports photographers I feel will want that TC.
It would be fantastic if they could make the normal bolt on teleconverter switch in and out like the built in Teleconverter lenses. It would be great if you could turn any lens into a ‘built in teleconverter’ lens.

That would be game changing for sure and love your idea

This, while very nice to have, would be impossible to implement imo.
The current lenses with the in-built tc, is designed to project its image onto the sensor without moving it forwards or backwards, when the tc is engaged or disengaged.
All non in-built compatible tc lenses are designed to be mounted directly on the camera to project the image on the sensor.
The tc alters that projection when mounted on the lens, simply disengaging it leaves the lens far from the cameras mount and nothing to correct the lenses image projection onto the sensor. It would have to return to the cameras mount to project the image correctly.

Just acquired a viltrox 85mm f1.8 stm Ed if lens ,it’s a used one in mint condition looks and feels brand new ,very impressed with the build and I.q ,all I’ve got to do now is find some targets for it ..but slowly building up my native Z mount collection/ selection
Bloody good price on it as well

Just arrived today as well the small rig flexible LED light ,what a superb bit of kit with lots of well thought out accessories.highly recommended

I really like SmallRig products. I have their base grips on all my recent Nikon and Fuji cameras. I also have a pair of their torch shaped and sized LED lights.

I was thinking of getting one, would appreciate your feedback once you have had a chance to use it. Thank you

I definitely think it's not simple to introduce and would likely change the optics and performance. I do wonder if it would work like an extension tube when the tele converter isn't switched in. Having never used extension tubes I don't really know what difference it would make.

Its more of a perfect world wish as there is the feasibility issue and it also doesn't make financial sense for Nikon either. Switch in Teleconverters now seen as a 'pro' lens feature that also makes £10K lenses worth paying extra for over without it.

Still pondering over a second body as backup and to save swapping lenses on the fly . Current thoughts are a used D7200 or a new Z50ii the latter being preferred choice atm .. will make my mind up later .
It’s not just a case of swapping lenses it’s changing settings as well I.e going from b.i.f at high speed burst to single shot for macro/ landscape etc .wish Nikon would incorporate a mode dial setting similar to the Olympus one that is so quick . .

Cannot you not use the saved settings banks on the dial for quick changes?

The tubes used for macro, reduce the mininum focus distance but in turn prevent the lens from focusing to infinity from memory which would be an issue.

On my Z8 I have the memory banks set up for different types of action: stationary, slow, fast and very fast, which I change by pressing a front function button and turning the rear control dial while looking at the top LCD, which shows which memory bank is in use.

But nothing really beats two bodies, one with a long lens for birds and another with a macro set up. A pain to carry, but much more efficient.

Probably but I need to set it up first and that is not easy at my age

And that’s my way of thinking at the moment Graham we shall see

They can be a bit of a pain to set up, and with the memory banks, you have the advantage and disadvantage of the settings being dynamic. I prefer this to the U1, U2 etc approach of the pro-am bodies, but it adds to the complexity.

hmmmm going back to the Z50ii its eating at me , in all honesty I don't NEED it ,but I WANT it its like a itch that won't stop

This video might be of some use Jeff if you haven’t seen it. At about 51 minutes he shows you how to program the F1 button to another group of settings using Recall shooting functions (hold). It allows me to go from birds in flight to perched birds and general photography.

Hudson Henry does some great videos around Nikon and settings, definetly one of the better ones to follow, I used his guide years ago to set up my 3 difference focus point on different buttons, I have BFF set to area mode, joystick press is spot focus (I use this if something is in between a subject an myself so I can pick the subject out quickly) and my lens fn button is 3d.

OK, just back from a week on Mull and finding the 180-600mm quite heavy so I need an alternative and just asking anyone who uses the Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S thoughts on this lens, yes there are many on YouTube from people who get paid from viewings so really looking for real world users, also any better options to go along side the 400mm f/4.5, not wanting a prime as like the zoom option for one lens, also have the 1.4 adapter. Thank you, Russ.

The 100-400mm is very versatile, relatively small, lightweight and focuses quite quickly. It is good optically and can take the tc, the auto focus speed does take a small hit with the 1.4tc, but optically it's very close to no tc. I like it, as long that's they range required. I have the 180-600mm, 400mm f/4.5 and 100-400mm, all have their uses. The 180-600mm would be the least used due to its size and weight, optically it's great for it's money.
A 24-120mm and 100-400mm is a great two lens setup.

Thanks for the info, actually do have a 24-120mm but thinking the1.4 on the 400 gives 580mm albeit loose a stop. Russ.

I have it and think that it is great. If I need longer then I add the TC x1.4.
I would say that on the Z8/9 the lens +TC combo works really well as it is a balanced setup but on Z7/Zf it does not feell as good.

I agree but I tend to use the Z8 with the 24-120 and the Z9 with 100-400+TCx1.4, and the Z7 with 14-30.
