WAMT....what annoyed me today!

I've thought about posting this but let it go but after having shown three times today before various Toutube clips I finally decided to post about it. There's one particular ad which annoys the hell out of me .Confused.com. It's just stupid. Yes, I remember it but not for good reasons.The idea is that the stress of finding a good deal re insurance is lifted from your shoulders. Who'd have thought ?

Well actually a couple of days ago.......

Pulled out behind another car from a lesser road into what might pass for the 'main road'.

About 50 yards on there is a bus stop bay that drivers quite often use to pull over into and there was a large Range Rover signalling to pull out but the gap between me and car in front was insufficient for him to pull out but he was pushing 'so to speak ' but I didn't brake for him. Of note there were no cars behind me!

My OH remarked that as we passed him he gave me a hand gesture plus as he pulled in behind me he flashed his lights & hooted. Not only that. he then tailgated me and when, approx 3/4 of mile later I then indicated to turn off to the left he closed the gap such that I could no longer see his front bumper.

A great example of a pet peeve....the bl**dy minded entitlement that a signal is a license to pull out in front of traffic correctly occupying road space. As for his road rage tailgating, what a plonker :(

Just slow down, that really pee's them off. Or, adjust one screen washer jet so it shoots over the top of your car, if he's sitting right up your backside you'll probably get his screen :LOL:

I also hate tailgaters and as I drive an auto, will often brush my left foot on the brake so the lights come on.

I find a bit of left foot braking normally gets rid of tailgaters.

I used to let them annoy me but these days I just drive as safely as ( can and they can do whatever they want.

That’s exactly what i do especially in 30’s and 20’s , I just ease off the throttle and slow down until they get the hint
I used to flash the brakes but just slow down now until they back off , mostly this works a treat

Yes, it used to annoy me more but I think I have mellowed with age and most of the time it's a case of "am I bothered"......... probably not as if they cause an accident it is their fault!

Though I have considered front & back dash cams for a while and maybe I should do so? I wonder does having them reduce your insurance premium?

Someone i once knew had a rear cam on their work van and a clearly readable notice next to it stating "Tailgater cam. Offenders will be reported"
 
Generally, having dash cams does not reduce premiums but,obviously, are invaluable when it comes to a claim.

It takes a bit of mental discipline but the safest way is to let the tailgaters pass and hope to see their car, along with them, in a hedge or a ditch some way on as they speed along. I'd stop to give the police my dashcam footage. We don't have a rear cam in the current car, just a dashcam, but I will get one when we change it. It won't deter them but it's good footage to have in the event.

Would anyone send their dashcam footage to police if they saw a blatant red light runner..to use an American expression.

According to one of those TV reality programmes, there was a bloke who tailgated a marked police car for more than a mile.

When the police driver pulled his "new best friend" over, the driver was found to be high on Cannabis, driving without a licence or insurance and the car had been reported stolen a few days earlier. The immediate response of the driver? "You're just picking on me because I've got a record"!

I've done that,Pete and for some twisted reason some don't pass when there is a good and safe opportunity to do so.They just like to keep annoying the driver. My wife gets a bit agitated by tailgaters and will pull into a lay-by, or whatever to let them pass.

Because many forces decimated the traffic dept we rarely see traffic police. Back in the day, you'd see them on dedicated raised mounds of earth on motorways or in lay-bys and on motorway slip roads. On our way back from Scotland the other week I saw an officer half-way up the slip road on the other carriageway (going north) with a speed detection 'gun'. I assume he'd be going for the high speed offenders ...85mph plus and catch up with them to pull them over. I'm 100% for speed detection units.

I take your point re bikes but the conversation is about cars so there is a point and very much so because a prosecution might well avoid the next time involving a collision and worse.

I use to get annoyed and flash my brake lights but now I am more chill and just slow down , they normally get the hint and back off
Yes its a real shame that there are less traffic patrols nowadays, that is what you really need to catch dangerous drivers
Those new speed cameras look good especially as the work in the dark
 
I wouldn't touch my brakes to deter tailgaters, I just ease off the throttle and move over to let them past; better off they are in front of me than behind. Reason for not touching brakes, is that if they do have a dashcam which picks you up brake-checking them and there is a collision then there is a very difficult conversation with the insurance companies (road-rage). Even if I see a tailgater and they end up in front of me, I always seem to catch up with them at the next town/lights/junction.

We do need to see more patrols, too many idiots on the road, did have a motorcyclist clip the mirror on my Golf last night as he was trying to filter carelessly past slower moving traffic in my lane.
 
I have a sticker on my back window; 'The closer you get, the slower I go'. I do just that, and rarely do I have anyone tailgate me now . . .

I just pull aside and let tailgaters get on their way, but if that's not possible then I'll let the car slow down a little bit and increase my distance with the car in front because I've got good brakes and chances are they'll run into the back of me if I need to stop quickly. I'd rather not have the hassle of a wrecked car and increased insurance premiums. They'll eventually tailgate some nutter.
 
I had a persistent tailgater following me in a 40 limit then we reach a 30 limit so I slowed to 30. I was using cruise control based on the GPS speed rather than my speedometer. There were some serious bends going through this village so I had to ditch my cruise control and drive a little slower for safety. The tailgater became more aggressive and decided to overtake on one of the bends and shot off into the distance. As I rounded the next bend I noticed a policeman with a speed gun and further down the road the offending car pulled over being given a ticket.

A couple of annoyances this morning.

Firstly, they're "resurfacing" the road that links ours with the rest of the world, so it's closed and we're stuck in until they've finished. Not too much of a pain since we got out early to grab milk and bread. More annoying is that the "resurfacing" is spray and sprinkle top- dressing and they haven't done any filling of minor defects that will deteriorate next winter.

Secondly, we arrived at Sainsbury's only to find that they have some sort of problem so were closed. Had to stop at the (overpriced) corner shop instead.
 
Was in London and stopped at Harry Ramsdens in Nottinghill. Wouldn’t normally choose to eat there but young son is fussy but does eat fish and chips.

They served my fish up with dark brown batter that shattered into glass like shards. I complained and they served up an identical second one!

Fair play they didnt charge us for any of the food but I did go away hungry!

  1. The poster hasn't been around for a while.
  2. The poster got the answer s/he needed and hasn't looked at the thread since.
  3. The poster didn't consider the question relevant.
  4. The poster considered the question rude, aggressive or otherwise unpleasant.
  5. The poster didn't reply for a combination of the above or some other good, bad or whatever reason.
  6. ...and new in at number 6, the poster would rather not converse with someone that describes them as a "mentally negligible halfwit".
Other options may or may not be available. ;)
 
Another motoring event......which apart from crass was potentially very dangerous!

There are some traffic light controlled roadworks near us, I was at the head of the queue on the red light and were approx 6 to 8 cars behind me.

Out of the blue a car came racing down the road, possibly 50mph and went through the red light. Of note he was lucky that the cars from the other direction were not yet moving.

One of those occasions when I wish I had a dashcam, because if I had I would have happily passed the footage to the Police! If that driver was willing to chance his arm on jumping the roadworks lights I would logically surmise his driving behaviour in general is very suspect. So, better that he gets prosecuted soon rather than later.

Another one for you. Forgetting which thread posts were in if the title isn't relevant. I'm still looking for the posts re private schools and VAT. If I don't get a response soon to a question I asked the OP in another thread I'll ask you as I think you'll know the answer. It's been three days so far.
 
I think I have just been conned out of £11.99 ordering MS Office 2024. The company is called ProperKeys and the purchase went through Amazon. I thought I had installed it, went to put in the long verification code and nothing I did would let me do it, there was no way of C&P the code.
I looked on Trustpilot for reviews and the majority are 5*, however, if you click on just the 1* reviews, they are recent and all seem to be having the same problem as me, verification code issues. The company is also not getting back to the customers.
I have been scammed, but is it really worth me getting stressed for £11.99?
I was already hot and bothered, wish I had an ice cold beer to calm me down.

When I bought, as an extra, MS Office 2024 to go with a refurbished Dell laptop from an MS certified refurbisher they supplied the time limited code that was only usable on the MS Store.

Once entered on the MS Store it made available both the full suite download or or the individual programs. The cost of MS 2024 Office IIRC was about £130

In regard to the likes of what you experienced I think I read somewhere that such companies buy redundant unused(?) codes from corporate/commercial sources and those codes may or may not work for a variety of reasons with the prime one being it has already been issued & used!

Pleased to hear it is sorted.....can I ask about the download i.e. was that from a known MS source or a third party?
If a third party and I know I state the obvious about such downloads I surmise that you AV scanned the installer file and again the whole PC once installed in case it downloaded anything in the background.

Of course all folks with such precautions will be on the basis of YMMV
 
I have a pinched nerve in the bottom of my back, it affects my butt and right leg, I get phantom pains(really strong) up and my leg, doctors arranged an MRI for next week and I have a course of a lot of pain killers and apparently nerve deadening tablets, some days are fine but others like today, I’m wasted, can’t concentrate, typing this has taken a while, wouldn’t drive, ok so good for the pains but driving? my wife crazy due to getting up for no reason, walking into a room and coming straight back out.
Called the surgery but doctor I’m dealing with is off this week so I’ll just carry on and hope for the good days are more frequent, ok, thanks for reading my rambling, I need a nap.

I've lived with a back injury for over 40 years, twice as long as I lived without it. What gets me through the painful times is the thought that every second I live through is a second closer to the point at which I feel some relief.

So hang in their Martin and know that every moment you live through is a moment closer to the time you get some relief.
 
RAC renewal - again. Up around 45% ! Get on phone, run around in circles and get usual cover for old price plus a £3 increase! Then they wonder why I don't auto renew!! :rolleyes:

Years ago, I had something similar. Referred to a physio and his initial words were "Where is your wallet?" Strange question but it seems that there is something called "Rep's bum!" You have a wallet in your back pocket, sit in the car or on a chair, it puts pressure on the sciatic nerve and "Hey Presto"! Agonising pains. Wallet moved to front pocket and problem solved!
 
Don’t often carry a wallet, cash is king, and I don’t have enough to make a wallet sized lump, but thanks.
 
i lost my phone recently...yes that annoyed me i was gutted especially as i know where it is i just cant reach it, i dropped it down a grid..anyway what really p***ed me off was phoning the insurance to report it LOST, they would not deal with me as my account didnt match the phone number i was ringing on...now if i had the phone that did indeed match my account...i wouldnt be ringing a bloody LOST phone reporting line... an absolute p*** take, had to wait untill i recieved a replacement simcard to pop into an old phone and i could then at least start the process, even then it was not easy to sort out and i had to recall several times as it kept booting me off...im 100% convinced they make it so difficult so you say sod it il not bother

I don't think that's quite what's happening.

My take is that there's so much fraud on claims that the front line staff are "damned if they do and damned if they don't". The result is that they stick to a set of rules, which protect the company against fraud, while at the same time ruining the company's reputation.

I suppose putting a "suicide chip" into phones is one way of reducing fake claims. The insurer would then require that the chip's activation is confirmed by the provider, before settling a claim.

I think it would have been more suspicious if the phone number DID match the phone that was being reported as lost/stolen.
 
This morning, at 8.45 I saw a couple of local authority environment people and wanted to alert them to a large, thick branch in the brook. I walked onto the pavement, off our drive, and was on the grass verge about to cross the road when they walked away to their van..a good way off, so I turned back and was about to cross the footpath back to our drive when ,fortunately, I looked to my left to see a mum furiously pedaling along the footpath on her bike with a 2-3 year old in a carrier behind her. I stopped as she whizzed by engrossed in a conversation on her phone. Had she hit me..she was just 10m away when I saw her..I'd have sustained a nasty injury, she'd have come off her bike and goodness knows what would have become of the child. The utter stupidity of it. I got the impression she was late for somewhere ,maybe the day nursery.

Fortunately, I do look now because one evening, a while ago, I put the wheelie bin and recycle bins on the grass verge for the next morning's emptying, turned round started to walk across the footpath when a young, going at speed, on his bike swerved round me. On another occasion a girl, of about 13, braked hard to stop herself running into me and ended up halfway down to the footpath on one leg. I asked how she'd feel if someone ran into her grandad/grandma. She apologised. I actually stop,look left and right, then cross the pavement to our drive. This sort of thing must be happening across the country. A couple of evenings ago I saw a young lad about 15..on a private electric scooter with a kid of about 6 or 7..maybe his brother,standing on the platform infront of him and it was dusk so not easily seen speeding along the road. No headgear for either of them. It's the wild west out there re these kids and their 'illegal' electric scooters/bikes.I wonder how many a year end up in A&E ?
