Before AI and before Photshop. In 1931, we had the "airbrush"

I thought this was rather fun, and indeed in 1971, when I started to work at my local portrait photographers', we had an airbrush for retouching and colourising photographs. I only saw it used occasionally, and I never learned to use it.

The other important historical point of interest is Gustave Le Gray, who in the 1850s was adding skies to landscape photographs.

I think we can definitely say that between Gustav Le Gray and Fox Talbot, they made the first forays into representing the wilderness in photographic form.

As a digression - I still remember the artwork that used to be done with airbrush back in the late 60s / 70s.

The science fiction images of Chris Foss looked very striking (still look striking I guess) - and photographic.
