There was plenty of scope to lift the shadows cleanly as it was a bracketed shot, but I felt that leaving the shadows gave it a little mood?

 
I agree with you - I really like the image as it is. You can see plenty of detail, and for me lifting the shadows would only spoil the atmosphere and create a more mundane image.

Thanks, was out teaching my son how to use the D810 and figured I may as well bring my new camera as well. Still getting to grips with it.
 
My grandmother's family built, owned and operated tall ships. Some were lost in storms etc.
