The 23mm pancake (the only lens I’ve got now) does 75% of what the 1.4 can do and it’s such a better form factor imho
 
I was thinking about the X-T5 last night, and tbh I don't think it's going to do much that my T4 doesn't already do, apart from the bigger sensor, and digital teleconverter. I know the AF is better too, but I don't really have a problem with the T4. Plus I checked the shutter count on my T4 at the weekend and it's way lower than I expected. It feels like I'd be replacing it for not much reason, if I'm honest with myself.

I think I might try an X-E5 from the hire scheme, and see how I get on with that, with a view to getting one and keeping the T4 as well...

I was thinking about the XT5 this morning as I dropped the MPB parcel off at the Coop :rolleyes::ROFLMAO:
 
Well the XF200mm F2 has just been collected. I used it extensively over the last few days at the Oulton Park Gold Cup, in fact it never left my X-H2S (only to get the TC inserted!). Its a great piece of kit, my thoughts

1) The IQ is astonishing, and no noticable compromises wide open at F2, its definitely a level up on the zooms

2) Its heavy (and quite bulky due to the diameter), I've carried it around for 3 days and I certainly know it

3) AF is very snappy (especially given the size of the glass)

4) Swapping the TC in and out is a PITA when in the field

5) Its a lot of dough (££££)

6) The benefits when panning are marginal at best (and some negatives in it's weight), and really you would want to add in ND filters, and these for 105mm lenses are not cheap (for a decent one anyway)

Am I going to buy one, not in the near future! The lack of zoom meant quite a few compromises especially when working with a circuit that you can quite close to, but that in turn had some benefits as I explored positions that I might not usually shoot from. I would definitely want an ND filter, if you have a lens that goes to F2 you want to be able to shoot at that, and even in our mainly wet weekend light, the shutter speeds for action shots were too short when the camera was wide open, everything would have been frozen, so the cars would have looked stationary, when ideally I'm looking for a shutter speed in the order of 1/400th for the near head on shots, which keeps some motion in the wheels.

If was out every weekend shooting motorsport, then its justification would be easier, but as I spend 10-15 days a year trackside then the investment v return ratio becomes harder to justify. It's already hard hough justifying the X-H2S + 50-140 + 100-400 just for 10-15 days!!!!

It's great that Fujifilm offer this service, as being able to try the lens was a great opportunity

Sensor is the same size, just higher resolution ;) Personally, I think 40MP is too many, especially on a cropped sensor. I think 24/26MP is the sweet spot - but that doesn't sell new bodies.

Its not cheap to hire, and you can only 'loan' each product once from Fujifilm. It's £115 + VAT per day plus delivery or £194 + VAT plus delivery for a week - maybe if I had something really special I would consider it.

But I would want an ND filter that wasn't soft this time, and thats £150-£200 for a decent one in 105mm

It all adds up, but its food for thought......................

Yeah, I meant higher resolution rather than bigger... was early and I hadn't had coffee!

I've never felt like the T4 wasn't high enough resolution, and the T1 I had was still absolutely fine, that was 16MP I think.

I did have a look at e-infinity earlier and they had the X-T30 III for £685, that's quite a lot cheaper than pretty much everything else I've been considering...

FWIW I went XT3 to XT5 and was merely "whelmed". It was good, but didn't feel much of a step up performance wise. The main plus was the resolution, but that comes with it's own compromises, like lenses not holding up, shake being more apparent (somewhat helped by ibis, but it was still a thing), slower burst etc.

It felt like a sidestep with a slight step forward.

I think most new bodies are only an incremental change, nothing earth shattering.
 
I did a road trip with my brother, from London to central Italy. As he was kind enough to drive me all the way (I don't drive) his reward was to go up the Stelvio pass (well, he went up it, down it, up it again and then down the other side as he was enjoying himself so much in his Abarth Fiat 500). While not holding on for grim death I managed some pics:

The EVF though is a backwards step, whilst the body is a bit smaller, the EVF is lower resolution than the X-T4/5 and is lower magnification. One of the best things about bigger EVFs is that they are bigger EVFs!! Going back to a smaller pokey (less resolution) one is definitely a retrograde step, and for me would be a deal breaker.

That's the beauty of the Fujifilm loan thing, innit? I'm not sure that will bother me too much tbh; between the X-T20, X-T30, XT-1 and X-T4 I've owned (blimey), and the X-T5 I borrowed, I didn't really register much difference in the EVF experience.

If I get the X-E5 I'm planning on waiting until I get my Xmas bonus (fingers crossed), then doing 12 months buy now pay later from Very and paying it off when I get next year's Xmas bonus... and keeping the X-T4 as well :)

If your are keeping the X-T4 then I would also try the X100VI, it's got a lot of advantages over the X-E5+23mm F2.8

1) OVF and bigger higgher resolution EVF
2) F2 Lens
3) Weather Sealing
4) Built In ND
5) Built In Flash
6) Leaf Shutter (near silent and easier to shoot handheld at slower shutter speeds)
7) Digital TC
8) More function buttons if thats your thing

I had this on loan to see if I would like the X100VI (I’d loaned the X100VI previously but never had chance to try it out due to the weather). It’s a nice little camera, performance wise it’s pretty much the same as the X100VI but the reason I chose the X100VI over it was that you can’t get a compact f2 23mm, well not as compact anyway, and it’s not weather sealed. Also, I wish they’d put and ISO dial on it rather than the film sim dial.

I guess it’s what you’re used to, I didn’t find the EVF on the X-T5 that great in all honesty and the X-E5 just felt like a slightly smaller version of that so it didn’t bother me too much (y)
