The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

That's a pretty serious offence, the ZF deserves better, go and buy a Voigtlander

I know you're joking but assuming we're talking about the Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 or indeed any of the f1.2's they're very different lenses but if going head to head the Voigtlanders have the build quality, wider apertures and the ability to get sunstars but the Sony 40mm f2.5 is smaller, lighter, cheaper and IMO overall the better lens.

Yeah, I'd guess the G is much more convenient.

There is something I still love about the CV40/1.2 though.

Funny you should say that, this is the real reason I have this body...

But now I'm definitely in the wrong thread...EXCEPT there is an e-mount in there!

Voigtlander Nokton 50/1.2 VMII on a voigtlander close focus VME II on a Megadap ETZ Pro.

So it's still an E-mount, right? ;)

The way you just casually strolled into a Sony thread with a Nikon using the e mount glass as an excuse is impressive, boss move :ROFLMAO: These playstation boys wouldn't know what to do with those dials ;)

Haha the thread title is "Anything else welcome" ;-)

But I normally shoot Sony, and normally post in here with my A7Cii, A5100, and somewhat random lens collection on that.

Nikon can't touch the Sony AF, but sometimes I just want to go for a wander with a camera with some proper dials.

(I also had the use of a GFX 100RF for a week, but really too wide a lens for me, I was cropping nearly everything from it).

Of course, it's not all about image quality, If It was I wouldn't have taken so many pictures with film era lenses and the Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 wouldn't be my most used lens.

I'm keep thinking about selling all my Voigtlanders but I don't seem to be able to do it even though I'm hardly using them.

The original idea was anything else Sony branded or related but things seem to get stretched to anything rivalling Sony. Or what we bought instead of a Sony.

Who cares?

And at least you/we can say we're just posting other stuff to see how it compares to Sony.

Taken at Old Gang Lead Smelting works with the A7Cii and Sony 20-70. Well worth a visit. It's nowhere near anywhere.

Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM is £669 brand new at Cotswold, similar to used prices here. That's tempting, not so much for landscapes as I can stitch with the 40mm, but for urban and a general walk around with the family for those spontaneous one-shot takes, could this be a decent lens to pair with the A7V and more worryingly, would it end up making my 40mm redundant?

For me, it wouldn't make anything redundant. Mainly because I'd rather shoot at 35mm or 40mm than 24mm :)

But, the 24GM is a lovely lens for sure - it simply won't let you down, even wide open. It will be a bit bigger than the 40mm though - I presume you have the 40G??

Yeah, the Sony 40mm f/2.5. It's a nice lens, crazy fast AF. Maybe I should use it more before committing to another lens so soon. The size does go against my 'portable' wish, but it's not too bad and whilst I do love Sigma ART lenses, I think the Sony 24mm has a far better autofocus motor than the Sigma's stepping type?

I personally think 24mm is a bit too wide for a general lens, you have to get pretty close to the subject to fill the frame and then you get distortion, particularly if it's shots of the family. YMMV (y)

If perchance you have a zoom lens, analyse the exif to see which focal lengths are most commonly used. FWIW my favourite prime lens is the Viltrox 26mm, though I also love the Sony 20-70.

That was a concern, although some of the sample photos I've seen online look lovely!

It's been a long time since I've used anything but a 70-200mm. I've always liked the 35mm focal length on full frame, so maybe I should just stick with the 40mm for now.

24mm is the same fov as the 1x on an iPhone - so I feel that focal length feels very “ordinary” for everyday stuff. TBH in most cases if I want to shoot that wide I’ll use my phone.

But in general I like teles and 35mm is “wide” for me.

If you don't need the f/1.4, and you are happy with f/2.5 at 40mm, what about one of the 24-50mm zooms?

Primes work better for me as they tend to force me to move around and find more unusual compositions if that makes sense? I find zooms create an element of indecision for me, trying to find that perfect focal length. Although I can see the merits of a zoom over swapping out primes, the time required for that and also increasing the risk of dust on the sensor.

I'm thinking I'd like to try 28mm so am considering buying the wide coverter lens for the X100VI however I'm 'concerned' it will upset the balance of the camera making it front heavy.

Yeah, I'm a prime person myself.

But the 24_50mm's do appeal a little bit. On paper at least.

The wide didn't seem to when I had the X100F, but the tele did. So I didn't use it. Did Hong Kong and Australia just with that combo.

Have you thought about the 24mm f2.8 G? If you don't need f1.4 or the bulk and weight that come with it.

I don't think a 24mm could replace a more normal lens like a 35, 40 or 50mm for me but 24 or 28mm makes a great addition. I have the Sony 28mm f2 but I have a few issues with that lens and have more recently used the 24mm f2.8 G more.
