Hello

Looking for hive mind experience here.

Insurance company are proposing to cat - N my car but will allow me to have the salvage with a reduced pay-out.

That's OK I thought I've spent over £2K this year (cambelt, service, tyres, ALB sensors, tyre pressure sensors  :$) - until I enquired about insuring it!!

Having paid in the region of £350 to insure this car for several years I was a bit stunned to be given quotes over £1.5k!!

I don't see where the extra risk comes from ?? Are the insurers just banding together to find yet another way of shafting the normal drivers amongst us ?

Any recommendation for insurers for cat N vehicles ??

Thanks in advance

David

go find a private broker most towns have one kicking about.
they usually specialise in stuff like that.

Thank you - a broker gave me the £1.5K quote, think I need to find another one

oh right, well try another one lol...

i would also just try calling up places like direct line.

I had to google Cat-N to find out that it means an insurance write-off. Google says most insurers won't touch them. It suggests a company called Brentacre.
No idea what car this is or what you think the value might be, but it maybe is worth more as a parts donor?

A few years back I decided my beat up old focus needed replacing The garage offered me £50 as a trade in, I think they were just being polite. I had seen an add locally saying they bought any car any condition, now while internally and mechanically the car was very good for it's age externally it was a different matter. I gave them a call and the ran through a list of questions about the condition, which I answered truthfully. They offered me a conditional £400 with an inspection during pick up later that week. The transporter arrived on time and the driver did the inspection and said it was in better condition than I had stated and the price was upped to £500. I asked him what they did and was told the vehicles were stripped, parts checked serviced/repaired as required and then sold, and the money was in my bank account before he had even finished loading it.

This RAC page has some useful advice about the rules surrounding Category N ...
