The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Sure it may make life easier, but you still have the choice how to frame.

Re different aspect ratio for vertical, you'll just lose some of the frame if the camera crops for you: just imagine what you want and crop in post.
As I mentioned above I have difficulty seeing what it would be like in a different format. Obviously I could just leave extra space at the top and bottom but I still won’t be able to visualise what it’ll look like until it’s done.
Not if you are shooting RAW, it can help with framing, obviously the crop needs to be applied (again) in post, but it can be useful to make sure you have everything in frame (and excluded the items you don't want in frame) before pressing the shutter button.

You still have the option of a re-frame in post
As mentioned, Sony crops the raw which I like, I don’t like Fuji for this as raw reverts back to the 3:2 and I have to try and match the crop back to what it was.

My understanding is that Sony crops the RAW by inserting metadata into the RAW file header, but all the sensor data is still there

In Lightroom can't you then just go

Open Crop → Aspect → Original,

I think you can ‘retrieve’ the full 3:2 frame with Sony but I’m not sure whether you can retrieve ‘as shot’ crop with Fuji.

Actually just thinking about it, I’ve not tried the different aspect ratios with Fuji, it’s the 50mm and 70mm crops I’m thinking of that reverts back to the full frame.

Yes you can get the full sensor RAW from the Fuji image having 'cropped' in camera, the crop only affects the JPG. Obviously if you shoot RAW+JPG you can then use the JPG image as a guid of where to crop on the RAW image

Yeah, I wish by default it would show the as shot frame but next time I shoot with it I’ll try the different ratios and digital crops and see if there’s a one click way of getting the as shot frame (y)

Just tried it, if using different aspect ratios LR does show the chosen ratio but you can retreive the full 3:2 frame like you can with Sony. If using the digital crop it shows you the uncropped version and there's no option to show you the cropped version meaning you have to do it manually.

Well I'm now the proud owner of a nearly new A7R VI. A friend of mine bought it recently but quickly found out it was far too much camera for him (he really does have more money than sense). He offered it to me a great price (quite a bit less than grey), and it just so happened that I got a very decent price from LCE for my mint A7RV along with the battery grip and my DJJI Osmo Pocket 3 (I now have the 4), and to be honest, it left me with almost next to no additional funds to purchase it from him. Its in mint conditions and he's only taken about 50 images with it.

It has everything I loved about the A7RV, but adds a few new goodies (namely Dynamic active stabilization, aspect markers, improved EVF, much faster shooting speed etc). TBH, the A7RV was no slouch, but as I shoot more and more video these days, it's really nice to have 4K 25(24), 50(60) and 100p(120) all with no crop in 10bit 422, as well as being able to punch in to APS-C mode in all framerates as well and still in 10 bit 422. It was mainly for the much improved video capabilities that I even considered it. Sure its no A1 II (not that I've ever used one), but feels like a smaller lighter version of my Nikon Z8.

It's a bit of a new learning curve, but hope to soon be getting some new shots and video with it. I've also sprung for two 512GB Pergear Type A CF-Express cards (and my god they are quick), as well as a spare new Sony SA-100 battery, so should be good to go now ?

Nice, enjoy (y). I don’t shoot video so have no idea what dynamic active stabilisation and aspect markers are but they sound impressive ;)

After a intens and extensive testing weekend I’m all in.

So.. I just sold almost all my Fuji gear (only body . Extender and Samyang lens left to sell lenses were quickly sold ) .

So the camera is almost ordered ;) (A7V). But now I’m trying to find memory card. Sony obviously advises Sony but they are a bit hard to find. Is Sandisk also suitable? I used this brand with my Fuji and they were fine. But are they fast enough for the Sony ?? And are there any “cheap” sellers who ship to Europe ? And how big is most useful. I’m not used to buy 160 gb with the Fuji. 64 or 128 I used most. But Sonys files are much bigger.

I will buy extra battery and maybe and external charger too

Oh and I ordered my first lens at Cotswold (20-70). And next week the camera and the 100-400 at panamoz. I feel like a child in a toystore ;)

Do I need more ? I think I covered my basics for now. .

I'm still using a Manfrotto 128GB 280/250MB/s SD card I bought when it was spotted on a great deal back in 2021! lol It's been performing fine in the A7V. It's no longer available and the 64GB ones seem more expensive now than the 128GB deal back then, but it's more to say that the speed of it has been fine even when shooting at the max. burst rate.

In my A7III I use a mix of 64 and 128 cards, including 13 year old SanDisk cards. You might want to decide on file compression etc early on, since that will affect the numbers of images and speed of saving.

Thanks again for the answers. I received a good deal from panamoz. Body + lens + 2 x 160 cf a tough from Sony for 3500 gbp. Not bad I think.

I was looking for the 128 but impossible to find. Sold out everywhere.

Yes. Have to dive into that. I’m completely not up to speed about all the ins and outs from the camera. I had it just for a weekend. So i was mainly busy to do my workshop in such a way that nobody would notice that I basically just picked the thing up.

I managed to make decent pictures though. This one is only cropped nothing fancy Lens was 70-200 Tree frog Tiny creatures DSC09938.jpeg

Any recommendations for a wireless remote to connect to a Sony A9 mk1

The official Sony one looks pretty pricey for what it is

I’ve used Sandisk, Lexar, Kingston, Manfotto, and another make I can’t remember without issue. With regards to speed make sure they’re UHS-II, but then depending on how quickly you’ll fill the buffer or how quickly you want to transfer you files will dictate how fast you want.

I personally wouldn’t bother with CFexpress in the A7V if you write to both cards (which I recommend) as the second slot is SD only and so you’ll not gain shooting speed wise having a CF express card in slot one.

I’m surprised Sony files are a lot bigger, I wouldn’t have thought the jump from 24mp to 33mp was that big.

I use Lossless compressed 99% of the time, the only time I don’t is if I want to shoot at 30fps when it’s limited to compressed.

I used the Pixel one for my A9 II, worked flawlessly for me. I think it’s the same port type.

I have this one now, the LCD doesn’t offer any real advantage imo.

If you need a remote with an interval timer, this has been working quite well for me from Aodelan. The price currently is £49.99, but I managed to get it for £42.49 a few months back. Haven't had any issues with it and quite like the feel of it in the hands.

EDIT: Realized that this won't work on the original A9 without an adapter as its USB C

What flash works with Sony A7 and supports TTL metering?
My flash fires from the hotshot but the exposures are always blown out even with the flash set to minimum.
Am I missing a setting. I am trying to use the fash for macro shots if that helps.

I've always used Godox with my Sonys without issue.

First thing I would check is exposure comp, both flash and camera. Are you using manual or semi auto mode on the camera? I always use manual when using flash so I've got full control.

Can you post and example shot with the ISO, f-number and shutter speed?

Are you using a bare flash or diffused, and how far away from the subject are you (I'd imagine very close)?

P.S. Apologies, I don't know what your previous experience of macro and flash are.

I'm dreading the cost of buying these needed accessories when I eventually buy my chosen camera (one of those two you've just been using). I need to start adding things like this into my budget.

A Tamron 35-150 was my go-to lens on Nikon F. The Sony mount version was too big, heavy and pricey for me so I've been waiting for the Tamron 35-100 to drop to a sensible price. I finally nabbed one from Cameraworld at £250 off - they've gone back up again. Had a play with it this afternoon and it should do what I want as my walkabout.

Before you look to the settings, what exact model of flash do you have, and is it the Sony variant (if it’s not a Sony flash)?

Well, quite a rare thing happened recently - MPB sent me a promotional email and as a result I asked for a valuation of my 7 year old RX100M3. I was surprised at their quote of '£400 as new' or '£375 as excellent'. I then tried LCE and Parks who gave £300 and £275 respectively for 'as new'. So, obviously, I decided on MPB and sent my gear off expecting to have the quote reduced from £400. Surprise, surprise then when they said the equipment was worth more and re-quoted £410!! Considering I paid only £279 for it in 2019, I think that's a bargain and a very rare occurrence. It's a great feeling when you win.

I've found that to be an increasingly common occurrence with MPB these days. In fact, I asked for a quote for something, then decided to keep it and did nothing about it. A couple of months later they emailed to say that the value of this kit had gone up, and increased their offer.

As a kid there was an area called 7 Corners, a few alleys near my Grandmas house. used to walk through to the sweet shop (now gone) about 70 years ago.
This is one of the gardens.
