star trails

I'm planning my first attempt and have been reading up and watching YouTube videos, but there's one thing I remain a little puzzed about. Using Star Stax there's the option of including a dark frame. Is is necessary or advisable to process/sync that dark frame as with all other photos taken...

Hi..... I sometimes go through a black & white phase and end up re-processing certain previously taken colour images into monochrome but I'm often sceptical about whether star trails and/or milky way images work well in black & white. Even if I personally like them at the time of re-processing...
