£1000 ish to spend on a lens for D3100

Ok, some of you may well say "buy a new body", but, I've only got a 18-55mm kit lens, and I was hoping I could buy a D700 in a few more months.

Anyway, I'm looking for a lens for air shows etc with.. maybe some portraits..... What are peoples suggestions for £1000 ish.

Some help would be great as I'm fairly new to photography.

I think you should go for a zoom telephoto lens like the Nikkor 70-200 f/4. Almost like a professional zoom lens, but with less weight and about they same performance. Should be a great match at the air shows

It'll be tough to get a lens that does both well. You could check out a sigma 150-500mm for the airshows (I'd have to double check it focusses on your body) which would then leave you enough money to get something like a 50mm or 35mm for portraits and still maybe leave a bit left over for a flash

Best option for a one lens setup is a 70-200mm f2.8 along with a 2x converter.

I'd prefer option 1

Go used and get a Sigma 100-300mm f/4... very, very capable lens and short enough for a bit of portraiture. They sell for about £400 used.

Pat has opened up an option here worthy of some serious consideration. It also allows you to update your zoom with a tamron 17-50/2.8 that you won't lose much money on upon resale.
