£1000 to spend on new camera + equipment

I think the 'nifty fifty' refers to the Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens. Pound for pound it is the best lens you can get with regards to being sharp, and of course an f1.8 lens for low light work and getting a shallow depth of field. It can be had for around £80. :)

I use mine mostly for concerts, when lights levels can be quite bad.

indeed, sorry the 50mm f1.8. as redhed17 says great for low light work and also has a shallow depth of field, I'm also using mine as a cheap macro lens with a set of extension tubes, seems to work quite well :)

I read that only AF-S lenses will work properly with the D40 and it doesnt have a focus motor on board, so AF lenses wont auto focus? From what i understand the nifty fifty is AF. doh :(

It's easy using manual focus if you're subject is static. Just a twist of the focus ring and it's sharp :)
