£150 (ish) budget for an everyday lens

A friend of mine has asked for a camera and lens combo for about £600. I've suggested the Canon 550d and that would leave about £150 for a lens for a trip to Japan.

I'm not sure what to suggest, he's happy with the idea of used and would like something that's versatile and doesn't have too be that long focally.

Thoughts?

A second hand one may be a little over budget, but it's well worth paying a little extra for one. I've one on my D300 and I love it!

If your friend is going to Japan, why not buy one when he gets there, possibly save a few quid.

If you can find a Tamron in that price range then I agree.

IMHO the sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 is also an EXCELLENT choice.

Personally I have always favored the sigmas (I've owned the newer OS also) for their extra 20mm reach and also the HSM (the tamron is a noisy beast)


You'll be looking at around £180+ for the tamron if you're patient
The sigma can be had for £120 odd if you're patient

I'd agree. Got the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 OS here and the sigma is a really good lens. Stays on my camera for pretty much everything. The extra reach is worth it, its sharp and stabilised.

550D will cost around £400 leaving £200 for a lens. A little tight but its doable.

That or just get the 550D and use the kit lens. Then you're about £150 under budget and the kit lens (18-55 f/3.5-4.5 IS) is actually pretty decent for the money. You can spend £130 of that money saved on a 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS which is a really good telezoom for the money. This would be my preferred as you'd have a good camera, a decent walk around stabilised lens and a good telephoto stabilised lens and be about £20 under budget.

For general use the Canon 18-55 and 55-250 are a great pairing, and must be why they released them, you cover 18-250 with 2 lenses that are both optically good, but won't set the world on fire, but then they haven't broken the bank.
