I have broken my beloved Panasonic Lumix FZ8 :'( So, as a result I'm now in the market for a replacement :cool:

I reckon that I can rustle up about £300 for a new one.

I'd love to get a digi SLR but realise that my cash won't get me too far, so I'll be looking at 'bridge' camera's again. To be honest, I've been really pleased with my (now dead) FZ8.

Any recommendations? or advice on what to avoid?

Having spent the last few weeks deciding on an entry level dslr I'd say you might be surprised what you can get for £300ish. Panasonic G1s are going for £330, not a dslr as such but that's splitting hairs! Sony have a few and you can pick up a pentax kx for about £350.

Granted they're not top end but it's a foot in the door.
 
Food for thought certainly ;) my fear is though, that I'll be opening up a VERY expensive door for myself!!!

Top of the range (ish) bridge camera or an entry level SLR and all the extra's?????
 
without a doubt.... we had a P&S and then a bridge, now on 2nd DSLR............ you'll never regret it.

I'm cautious about buying 2nd hand for various reasons, what are the Nikon D3000's like?

Rated or not?
 
Same quality and functionality as a D60 (which obviously I am a fan of) but with nicer LCD and potentially useful GUIDE mode for easing the learning curve. Haven't heard any particular complaints about it, but I haven't used one myself.
 
You get similar picture quality throughout the range.

Main differences are more function buttons and dials etc. on higher end bodies for quicker access to alter settings without menus. Also more advanced focus systems and frames per second. But a good photographer will get the same picture out of most bodies.
 
If you can stretch the budget to £314, the Panasonic LX3 in in stock at WE.

I have the LX2 and I think that it's great, the LX3 is supposed to be better so may be tempting.

Fuji HS10 bridge, or a used DSLR.

But, your £350 on the HS10 is £350.

The £350 you spend on a DSLR now, will be another £100 next month, £50 the month after, £175 the next.........
 
either S/H DSLR/lens or new Canon 1000D & S/H kit lens or 24-105mm

get the DSLR experience !
