Hey,
It's my birthday later this month and have no idea what I'd 'like'.
Can't think of anything other than something photography oriented.
I currently have a 400d, 28-200m and 18-55mm Canon lenses, 430exII speedlite, wireless triggers.
I only shoot as a hobby, things at home, wildlife, flowers etc.
1 thing I have noticed is the DOF with my current setup isn't great.
Seen some great photos on here taken with aperture around 1.8 and I love it.

With roughly £250-300 to spend which route should I go...
A nice Canon fit lens maybe 85mm f1.8, 35mm f2, 50mm f1.4?

Or put the money towards a new body...
Maybe 550d or other?

Aahh don't know which is best. Would I benefit more from a higher spec body or higher quality lens?

:help:

buy glass with the money.

a tamron 17-50 f 2.8 would be a good replacment for the kit lens, 2nd hand are around £200. It makes a good all round lens a great buy.

Then maybe look at:

Canon 50 f1.8 £75 ish new or save a bit more and get a Canon 50 f1.4 £280 ish new.

Tamron 90mm marco £250 ish 2nd hand is a very good marco lens

If you want a good wildlife lens I think you will need a bit more cash. Then look at canon 70-200 f4 or Sigma 50-500. both of these 2nd hand will be over your budget, sorry.

+1 for the "put towards a 40D" idea.

This is such a well-sorted camera it is fantastic for the kind of cash it is going for nowadays. I reckon it is 80-90% as good as my 1D3 in every area - which is no bad thing !

IMHO, forget about the Canon 50f1.4. Had it for a couple of years and I think you get much better vfm from the f1.8, as suggested above.

Good luck with your choice.

Tamron 28-75mm f2.8.

Always spend the money on glass, it keeps value better than tech.

Secondhand Sigma 30mm f/1.4? on a crop sensor it's a more natural length than a 50mm.
