£500 for an action camera with good burst mode...

indoor sports or outdoor sports?
 
For £500 I would suspect your only really looking at the Canon 1Dii(N). Maybe a 7D if you have a bit more to spend or a 1DIII I suppose? Not a canon expert.

Nikon wise a high FPS and a buffer to used it will probably mean a D3/D700 which puts you north of £1000.
 
Is it someone who has 500 for a camera or total budget and will need lens as well... not such a silly question given the facts as we see them :)
 
how about a Go-Pro? added fun with mounting it on the kids to get video ;)
 
nikon d300 or what about a canon 40 or 50d wit some cash left over to go towards a lens

Im sure you can but the D300 has far far better AF than the D7000, the AF points are much better distributed, i shot Rugby professionally with a D300 and other than poorer high ISO performance it was every bit as good as my D3, i used a D7000 for a while and the keeper rate was poor compared to a D300, the d300 can shoot at 8fps as well if you throw a £30 grip on it or use AA's, the buffer on the D7000 is also shocking as is the build quality and weather sealing compared to the D300 which is a pro spec camera against a consumer spec D7000

I'll second a D300, and they can be bought quite cheaply these days'
I've used my for fast moving horses, birds in flight, running dogs etc,
But one thing you do need is a decent fast focusing lens on the front too
 
All I can add is for what you're after: avoid Pentax. I love my K5 and it's great for what I want, but despite ok burst performance, I've found its AF slow and unreliable (lots of hunting) and it doesn't have the selection of long lenses that Canikons have.
