Would the Canon 1.4 0r 2x converters be ok on a 450d camera body together with the Canon 100mm-400mm L lens ?

They will work, but the lens will be manual focus only. Non-1 Series EOS bodies will only autofocus on lenses with a maximum aperture of f5.6 or wider. A 1.4x extender would make an f8 lens, and a 2x would make an f11 lens, not to mention degrading image quality significantly.

Thanks for the info Richard.(y)I thought I had read somewhere that they would not work ie auto focus but wasnt sure.

I think there's a trick involving taping some of the contacts on the coverter to fool the camera into thinking it's still an f5.6 lens, and so enabling autofocus. However, an f11 lens isn't going to be much use in anything but bright sunlight.

... or bright moonlight.

I have a 70-200mm F2.8 (non-IS)
If you was to chose a Convertor, which one and why?
I'm more swayed by the 1.4x for the speed and quality, but still unsure.

If you want to get to 400mm, then I think you'll find the 2x Extender is definitely your better choice.
