I’m in a bit of a muddle here guys and looking for a bit of advice…

I’ve lost the lens hood for my Sigma 10-20mm:bang:,

but as I seldom used it I wonder if it is really worth replacing.

I’ve had the lens since the start of the New Year and never really bothered with the hood but now summer is on the way I’m wondering if there might be a real need to purchase another.
Thing is I don’t want to buy one then hardly use it:thinking: (I do use the lens quite often)

So my questions is if you have a wide lens do you find you use the hood or not?

As I dont use any UV filters to protect the lens, I find that the hood does the job admirably. I haven't noticed it cutting down on any lens flare but maybe that's because I never use my 10-20 without.

I find it quite important om my 10-20, cuts out a lot of flare and took a few knocks as well
Buy one, you might regret it otherwise

Just get one for the protection factor.

I still don't believe lens hoods really prevent flare :P

I always use the lens hood on my 10-20mm. The lens is so wide, it can catch a lot of direct light coming in from various angles outside of the shot itself, and if they illuminate the front glass, you're going to get flare.

Thanks for the replies all …

Whilst the protection idea is a good point I do have a uv filter and the clip on lens cover (although I remove the uv filter as I find the results look sharper when taken without the uv on the lens).

I’m more worried about the flare aspect, although I’ve never yet had any pictures suffer from flare I’m thinking with the coming (hopefully) sunny/bright weather there might be a problem??

The UV filter on the end, if anything, is only going to increase the chance of flare, and thus give more justification to the need of a lens hood. :)

I use a B+W Pro UV filter on mine (cost me about 70 quid), and it doesn't affect the sharpness of the lens (to any practical degree) and is extremely good at controlling flare, but I wouldn't shoot without the hood.

I'd get a hood even if it was just for the protection factor. I seem to not like my lenses to be 'naked'

I always have the hood on purely for a protective edge, but as regards flare I'm sure a well-placed hand would provide as much (if not more) protection.

Would that be the hand holding the camera, or the hand supporting the lens that you use as a shade? :)

My tripod does a good job of supporting both the lens and camera, it's great! Leaves a whole free hand to do all sorts of things with!

But not everybody's always shooting on a tripod. Sometimes your hands are busy. :)
