100-400 for Macro?

We were playing with the 100-400 at the weekend trying to get some practice in before Namibia.

I'd seen somebody use one to capture damsel flies before so I tried this fly

It isn't easy getting the focus right, but actually when I cropped it I didn't think it was too bad.

This is at 400, so we were about 5 feet away from it.

The 100-400 is not a macro lens, so true macro is not going to happen! but if your subject is large enough you will be able to capture some excellent close up shots..HTH..Steve

Twas merely a light hearted thread title, though I do have a close up filter to fit it I doubt I could ever hold it still enough to keep a fly in focus.
 
Thanks. I've also taken some decent shots with a Canon 500D close-up lens attached too, but can't find them ATM. This was some years ago, and I have since got a proper macro lens now.
