Hi everyone,

Got a question for you - got a 100-400....and I've gone to use the "friction/lock" ring this evening and there appears to be bits of 'paper' coming from that area. Not masses and it stopped after a while, non got into the lens - but I'm curious what it is and whether it's something I should get checked out or if it's just a 'feature' of the 100-400?

Don't know if it's a feature, never happened to mine but could you have overtightened the lock and the 'paper' is paint?

Not sure whether you want to read this but here goes anyway....

The friction ring is made of cardboard and works by increasing the pressure of ball bearings on the cardboard sleeve as you rotate the ring....the cardboard sounds to be disintegrating in your case. The next stage is very likely to be the bearings scoring the inner casing of the zoom mechanism and that'll be an expensive to fix. As it is at the moment, you may well be looking at £150-200 to fix but probably considerably more if things are allowed to get worse.

I can't be 100% certain that this is all correct but it's the likely cause IMHO and you can save yourself a lot of cash by getting it checked out....hope I'm wrong.

I didn't get it wet no - only received it today.....b****r.....

Bob - one thing - this isn't very thick - it's paper thin - which is why I thought it may be paint as per previous poster....would expect cardboard to be thicker??...

For those who are having this problem Matt knows me from another forum and has pointed me here.

The Black paper syndrome is the friction material thats between the barrel and front tube. The black paper is this friction surface dissintegrating.

So if you have this problem it will unfortuantely get worse and than the grip will fail.

Cost of repair by Canon £226

I sent a 100-400 in to canon a few weeks ago with focus and IS problems, before they even looked at it they called me and saed it would be a fixed price repair of £127 inc vat and return postage. Even got a 6 month warranty with it.
 
two different faults I suppose. I was quoted £162 by one company but when I got there after a 2hr drive they where shut :bang:

Personally I think they spin the silly price wheel and where it stops is what you pay. :shake:
